Ellie went home sad and slow.
If she found the lover ever,
With his red-roan steed of steeds,
Sooth I know not! but I know
She could never show him—never,
That swan’s nest among the reeds!
Little Ellie, with her smile
Not yet ended, rose up gayly,

LAMBS SCARCE IN WALL STREET.
Austin Tribune.
Conditions in Wall street are now in
striking contrast with those that prevailed
during the boom. In customers’ rooms
that formerly were well filled there is
nowadays but a solitary survivor. Man-
agers and members of firms sit around
waiting for the change that once more
will bring activity. Recent Instances of
large houses going for several d'ays at a
time without an order are common. The
“lean days” have struck the exchange and
the cigar men and other small businesses
that catered to “the street” are having
a hard time.

Washington, D. C., June 15.—It is
pected that Cardinal Satolli, who has
rived in this country, will soon visit
apostolic delegate, the Rev. Diomeda Fal-
conio, in this city.
There is considerable speculation, in a
quiet way, among high Catholic authori-
ties as to the exact meaning of the cardi-
nal’s visit to America.
It is unquestionably true that the
Catholic hierarchy in the European coun-
tries hold a different view regarding the
condition of the church in America than
do those high in the councils of that
stitution in the United States.
Cardinal Gibbons has been the most
fluential exponent of what is called
“American idea” in the church
exists in tljis country.
The fact that the church has grown in
this country where church and state are
separated, as it has in no other country,
during the last quarter of a century, is a
.telling refutation
those in Europe
should be united.
What Cardinal
“American idea”
church has flourished independent of the
state and without any relation to it what-
ever, except to honor its laws and its in-
stitutions.
There are a few Catholics in the United
States who do not agree with Cardinal
Gibbons, though no one questions but that
the lay members of the Catholic church,
as well as the priests, are patriotic and
loyal American citizens, but in Italy it is
hardly possible under present conditions
to be a faithful Catholic and at the same
time a loyal and patriotic subject of the
government. It is recognized, of ^course,
here that the conditions are entirely dis-
similar.
The belief has been expressed that the
new pope has sent Cardinal Satolli to
America to report to him on present
ditions in this country. While on
two former visits Cardinal Satolli
cordially received by the American
pie, his recommendations proved a
appointment to a large number of
fluential Catholics in this country,
has been severely criticised for the
ter of approval he wrote concerning Abbe
Meignan’s book on Americanism. This
book was pronounced by a great many
of the influential Catholics as a work of
the most objectionable character, and gave
a harmful impression in Europe regard-
ing the American spirit of freedom which
prevails in the church in this country.
The friends of Bishop Keane.
Washington, are particularly
against Cardinal Satolli because
1
claim, he degraded the bishop in
him to be removed from the Catholic uni-
versity rectorship. Then he is charged,
after having expressed himseif in the
highest terms in favor -of the American
spirit in the Roman Catholic church here,
with having taken the lead with the radi-
cal church party in Rome.
Is the Roman cardinal coming here as
the direct representative of the pope with
a view to selecting a new cardinal for
America to serve as Cardinal Gibbon’s
colleague, and reperesnting views regarded
as less liberal than those held by the
cardinal, Archbishop Ireland and others?
This is the question that is being quietly
discussed in certain Catholic quarters.
The announced purpose of the cardinal’s
visit is to perform a marriage ceremony
and attend the St. Louis exposition.
