ded us this week by Cornell
Grifitt, F.F.A. supervisor of the
Leonard High School, and was
published in a local paper a
number of years ago. Mr. Grif-
fitt states that his family has
found it to be one of the most
effective means of destroying
the pesky grasshopper and that
they have used it a number of
years we are therefore publishing
the entire item.

w
MISS EMMA LOUISE FISHER,
and more coming. In Kansas,
many years ago, the grasshoppers
came as a plague and ate the
crops. The results was that many
people actually died of starvat-
ion, so the story goes, while
others left the Sunflower State,
never to return. The grasshoppers
literally took the country. They
came in such hordes as to actu-
ally stall trains., so many of
them getting on the tracks that
he engine could not move, the
wheels simply spinning around
on the slick rails.
While we never expect to see
conditions so bad here, still they
could get worse, and they cert-
ainly are bad enough now. In
order to combat these pests
A & M College has sent out a
formula which is said to be the
most effective ever used to kill
these pests, and below we give
the formula.
Formula to Kill Hoppers
Wheat Bran (avoid shorts
................................................ 25 lbs.
White Arsenic (or Paris Green)
„ ............................................ 1 lb.
Amyl Acetate, 2 tablespoons full
1 oz.
Cane molasses (avoid corn syrup)
2 qt.
Water ,10 qt.
Mix the brand and white* arse-
nic while dry, dilute the molas-
ses with the water and add
amyl acetate. Put this mixture
over the brand and poison, mix
thoroughly and sow broadcast
where young hoppers are found.
Don’t put the mash out in piles.
Don’t use calcium arsenate or
lead arsenate.
Be sure your poison is either
white arsenic or paris green.
Don’t use corn syrup. Cane mol-
lases is necessary.
