The Bible Story
By LEWIS R. FULLERTON
When we close our books with
the reading of the prophecy of
Malachi, the silence of the heav-
ens descends upon the world. The
Spirit of inspiration no longer
breathes upon hearts of men. The
Old Testament story is over. Four
hundreds years of human history
drops into the abyss of oblivion
until, in the wisdom of God we
find the silence of the heavens
broken by the gift of Jesus Christ
who came to die for our sins.
As we begin to read the New
Testament, we are introduced to
the angels who came singing the
song of “Peace on earth, good
will toward men,” proclaiming
the birth of the lamb of God, who
take th away the sin of the world.
As we continue to read what the
Bible has recorded for us, the
story tells us of Jesus who was
bom of the virgin Mary and who
grew up, even as boys and girls
develop today to be the only hope
of a sin-cursed, lost world. As
we study the story of Christ re-
vealed in the four gospel accounts,
we find that he is incomparably
good and holy in every fashion.
The Bible tells us that he went
about performing miracles to in-
dicate his divine sonship, healing
those that were sick of many dis-
eases, causing the blind to see and
the deaf to hear. He was able to
make the lame walk in unre-
strained joy. During this time
Jesus Christ, who is the great
revelation of God to man, was
making known the will of the
Almighty. He had come, he said,
to bring the doctrine of God and
to point men to the path that
would lead them home to their
Maker. As I read he story of the
life of Jesus opposition begins
to form against the Son of God
until his enemies deliver him to
be crucified on a piece of wood
outside the city of Jerusalem. The
Son of God is taken to a place
that looks like a dead man’s skull
with the hide and the hair peeled
off and there he is nailed to a
wooden cross. There by faith I
can hear him groan in agony and
there is torn from his lips that
desolate cry when Jesus said,
“My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?” This is the great-
est event in the history of the
world. Jesuus has died upon the
cross, and his blood has been
shed—blood that was shed for
the sins of the world when he
made the supreme sacrifice —
that you and I might be able to
live. How the devils must have

laughed in fiendish glee when
Jesus died! The world wrote
“finished” to the career of Jesus
Nazareth. But the world then,
like the world has been so many
times through its history, was
wrong. As I continue to read the
blessed story of the life of Jesus,
I find that he is resurrected from
the dead by the power of God.
I can walk in the company of
those who came to anoint his
body because they loved him so
much, and I can hear with them
the voices of the angels who say,
“He is not here. He is risen as
he said.”This is the story of the
love of God, revealed in the gift
of Jesus Christ his Son, who came
and lived and suffered and died
that you and I might be saved.
Jesus, clothed with his iridescent
majesty and glory, just prior to
his ascension to his Father, said
to his disciples, “Go into all the
world and preach the gospel to
every creature. He that believeth
and is baptized shall be saved; he
that believeth not shall be darned.”
(Mark 16:15-16). Jesus went to
a little hill outside the city of
Jerusalem, and while his dis-
ciples looked into heaven, he dis-
appeared from sight. And the
angles stood by them, telling them
that he would come again in the
same manner that they had seen
him going. Then in accordance
with the command that he had
given them, the disciples of the
Lord went back to the city of
Jerusalem and there they waited
