How the news will affect the senti-

LONDON, May 9.—The Admiralty issued a statement this
morning estimating that at least 1,700 of the 1,900 passengers
and crew aboard the Lusitania, were drowned when the great
liner was torpedoed witouht warning by a German submarine
off Kinsdale Head at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The Lusitania was steaming along about ten miles off Old
Head Kinsale on the last leg of her voyage to Liverpool, when
about 2 o’clock in the afternoon, a submarine suddenly ap-
peared. and so far as all reports go, fired tjwo torpedoes with-
out warning at the steamer. One struck- her near the bows
and the other in the engine room. The powerful agents of de-
struction tore through the vessel’s side, pausing terrific ex-
plosions. Almost immediately great volumes of water poured
through the openings and the Lusitania listed.
Boats, which were already swung out ion the davits, were
dropped overboard and were, speedily filled with passengers
who had been appalled by the desperate httack. A wireless
call for help was.sent out and immediately rescue boats of all
kinds were sent out both from the neighboring points along
the eoast and Queenstown.

QUEENSTOWN, May 8-The Lusitania's dead today, 36 hours after the liner was torpedoed by a German submarine, are
conservatively estimated at 1200 with nearly 700 survivors known and hope gone for the others.
Nearly 150 Americans are missing. The body of Charles Frohman, the noted theatrical manager, has been recovered.
Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Elbert Hubbard, editor of the Fra and the Philistine, Miles Forman and other famous Americans are
missing and are probably dead. i <
Forty children are known to have been aboard and most of them perished. Of the 230 first-cabin passengers on the
boat, only seventy-six are known to have been saved. \
There is a dispute regarding the exact number of passengers on the Lusitania and some estimates say the numbers
'........... 1500 dead. I
Rescue boats scattered toward several nearby ports last night and today, but before mostof them made ports the patrol
boats had taken off their passengers and landed them at Queenstown. J
The Admiralty scoured the nearby coast in the hope of finding more survivors at remote ports, but finally announced
that it had little hope ot any more saved than are shown in the otticlal reports.
The agent of the Ctinard freight department denied the German report that the Lusitania carried explosives and ammunition.
For hours crowds waited here and oxer England for further details, hut none came through. The rescue boats, returning to port. Iirouglit the
liodies of tlie dead for the largest part of their cargoets.
Hospitals and public houses here Mere packed in caring for the dead and injured. The bodies of two small c hildren, with their arms clasped about
other, rpade one of the tragic features of the day’s developments. They were washed ashore and have not been identified.
