David fights Goliath in Lindale Friday night
BY LOREN BLACKBURN
After two scrimmages under
their belts, the Lindale coaching
staff have a better grasp of the
team’s strengths and their weak-
nesses.
“We found out what we wanted
to know,” said Head Coach
Shipley.
The Eagles fielded three fewer
players said Coach Shipley. With
the loss of Reginald Jenkins (FB/
DE), who has a strain muscle;
Willie Brown (WB/LB), down
with a bruised hip; and Ricky
Kincad (SE/WR) who was both-
ered by a sprained ankle, the Eagles
seemed slim in the Van scrim-
mage due to these possible injury.
“I recently sprained my ankle
so I won’t be playing in Van this
Friday,” said Ricky Kincaid
during a brief interview Aug. 26.
However, he is still looking
forward to the game with Sulphur
Springs.
Also on the injured list is Billy
Hardy who sprained his ankle
during the Van game.
It is unlikely we will see him in
the Sulphur Springs game.
Although he is concerned about
the injuries, Shipley is confident
that the Eagles have the bold spirit
it takes to make Lindale proud.
“There should be no problem
playing them against Sulphur
Springs,” Shipley said. “They
(Sulphur Springs) do have a larger
team, but our guys will play for all
they’re worth.”
“It’s like David fighting
Goliath,” said Shipley.
However, the Eagles are not
the only team with problems. The
Sulphur Springs varsity team lost
many players on their offensive
and defensive lines last year to
graduation.
“This is a re-building year for
us,” says Sulphur Springs Head
Coach James Cameron. “Most of
our players are coming from the
junior varsity.”
After observing Sulphur
Springs Varsity at scrimmage,
Coach Shipley was not completely
sold on the idea of the proposed
“rebuilding program.”
“They’re not rebuilding,” said
Shipley. “They’re reloading.”
“Some players to watch from
Sulphur Springs team are 1 st team
defensive all-star Damian Bell;
Lance Larry, outside linebacker;
and Cory Young, comer-back,”
said Cameron. “Our football strat-
egy this season is an aggressive
defense, a conservative offense,
and a good kicking game.”
Coach Cameron mentioned he
knew Coach Shipley mainly by
reputation.
Nevertheless, Cameron also
said, “I’ve got a lot of respect for
the man.”
Will the knowledge the Eagles
gained in scrimmage be enough to
win a battle against Sulphur
Springs on September 4?
Come and see.
