Dear Sir:
I enjoyed the article in the Sun on October 9 concerning
th* MARS networks. My family and I can fully appreciate the
work done by the ham operators associated with MARS. !r.
the ten months my husband has been stationed tn Vietnam,
he has been al le to-talk to us on the average <>f once a month
via MARS hook-up. The boost in spirits for both of us, and
the happiness of our twi bovs when tliev can say hello to
Daddy , arc worth far mor« than the small cost of the calls!
May we thank you for printing tills article, and may we say
a heart-felt “thanks” to all the men associated wi»h MARS.

Last week my nephew came home after dark to see the hay
burn blazing so he though;, and called the Fire Department.
I parked my car along the highway so 1 could signal the men
where to tur: off to the house. Tien a fireman and a fire truck
took over, blocking commuter traffic and making way for the
other fire equipment. It's a shame the way cars kept on flying
by, not paying any attention to the emergency signals. The
Alvin Volunteer Fire Department was at the blaze in a very
short time, ready to help.
Suddenly, my father, J. B. Choate, appeared from behind
the barn to see what all the lights and commotion was way-
out Ln the country. He explained that he had been Iwrning old
hav. but that it was well under cmtrol.
But it could have been for real, and the Alvin men were
ready un the spot. For this, my family Is very thankful to
our local firemen.
