H. Killebrew Is
HBW Chapter
Player Of Year
The last time Killebrew
came to Houston for a baseball
event he had hard luck. That
was on July 9. 1968 when he
played in the major league
All-Star game in the Astro-
dome and pulled a hamstring
muscle. That kept him out of
action for two months and cut
his home run production that
year to 17.
But Killebrew came back
last year to have his finest
season. The 32-year-oldthird
baseman whammed a career
high 49 home runs and batted
in 140 runs, the highest total
in the American League since
Roger Maris knocked in 142
in 1961.
Killebrew now is
the all-time home
with a career total
circuit wallops and
a cinch to scale the 500 pla-
teau that only eight players
ever have reached. He has
been named to the American
League All-Star team 11 times
and at three positions, first
base, third base, and the out-
field.
