Happiness is: A Sophomore
quarterback that comes
through in the clutch. Happi-
ness is also a fleet end that
runs to daylight.
What happiness really is. is
winning a ball game that nobody
thought a team could win. and
doing it in their first home
game as an AAAA school.
For three quarters the Al-
vin Yellowjackets and the Ne-
derland Bulldogs fought each
other to a standstill. The Bull-
dogs might have had more
yards and offensive plays, but
things were still even on the
scoreboard. Alvin held Neder-
land on downs five times dur-
ing the course of the game in
the shadow of their own goal.
Neither teamcouldpunchthe
ball over for a score.
Then, with 10:24 left in the
game Alvin again held on downs
and took over on their own 26
yard line.
The 'Jackets fumbled on the
first play and Nederland was
in business on the Alvin 25 with
10:19 in the game.
Four plays and one first
down later, Scott Schion
squeezed into the 'Jacket end
zone for the game's first score.
The extra point try was good
and the Bulldogs led 7-0 with
9:13 to go.
Alvin received the kick and
was unable to move. Tom White
came in and kicked the ball
away. But there was a major
penalty against Nederland and
the 'Jackets got another shot
15 yards closer to the Bulldog
goal. But even then they
couldn't manage a first down
and Tom again came in and
punted.
Nederland got one first down
then slowed. They punted and
the 'Jackets had another
chance. But with 3rfjl to play
Ralph Thomas tackled trying to
get off a fourth down pass. Ne-
derland took over and the Al-
vin faithful began the long trip
to the exits.
But the Alvin defense was up
to the task before them. They
allowed the Bulldogs but one

punt the ball away and give the
'Jackets one more try.
There was 1:28 left in the
game when Ralph Thomas
brought the team to the line of
scrimmage. His first play was
a pass tc Mike Kacz. The ball
was thrown over the wrong
shoulder but Mike caught it,
and that's aii that matters.
Alvin was in bulldog terri-
tory on the Nederland 39. Tho-
mas' next pass was incomplete.
He then threwashortpassto
Kacz, whocaught it. faked right
and went left, to the wide side
of the field and daylight. Also
to Jerry McKinney who threw
the block that let Mike beat the
defensive back into the end
zone.
The 'Jackets never hesita-
ted. There was no doubt in
head coach Harden Cooper's
mind, there would be no tie.
The 'Jackets huddled briefly
at the Nederland 10 then trot-
ted to the line. Thomas took the
snap from Randy Belcher and
rolled right. If he had held onto
the ball for one second more he
would have been flattened. He
threw it, but badly. Marvin
Kirk made a good diving catch
in the end zone and the 'Jackets
had a one point lead with 28
seconds left on the clock.
Alvin kicked off and Neder-
land ran it back to their own
35. From there they moved no-
where. Three incomplete pass-
es later Alvin had won a foot-
ball game.
Coach Harden Cooper was
about as happy as a coach can
be. He had this to say about
Ralph Thomas' performance:
"He gutted it out, that’s about
all you can say. He’s just a
Sophomore and it was spotty
in places, but he gutted it out."
Cooper cited the kicking
game and the defense fortheir
performances and great im-
provement over the showing
last week.
"I've always said that if you
get a good kicking game and
good defense you'll come out
all right," Cooper said.
Cooper's choice to go with
the Sophomore signal caller
was not one of long delibera-
tion. Tom White was injured
and not able to play. Tom
warmed up before the game
but his shoulder hurt him and
Cooper figured that if he got
hit once he would be out of com-
mission for a while. So he went
with Thomas, and the Sopho-
more came through.
Tom will probably be back
soon. Ralph is helping him get
well. Nothing makes an injured
athlete he al faster than some-
one in his place doing a good
job.
