The insurance companies
are asking for another raise
in automobile Insurance rates.
They received a 14 per cent
raise just last fall and now
they are back asking for more.
We can’t believe that auto-
mobile Insurance rates are too
low. The State Board of In-
surance will decide the matter
at a meeting on June 30th. If,
you want to say anything on the
matter you must have your
statement in quadruplicate at
the Austin office by June 23rd.
We suggest that the whole
matter of required insurance
be dropped. This business of
requiring a car owner to carry
liability or be financially re-
sponsible is not working and
apparently never will. Why
not try the “no fault” method?
Maybe that will be better.

To Offset Anticipated Deficit
An increase in taxes In the
Nocona Independent School
District was approved by the
School Board Inregular meet-
ing Monday evening at the
school office. The Board voted
a blanket across - the - board
Increase of 34 percent in val-
uations in the district but at
the same time voted to de-
crease the tax rate so that the
ictual anticipated increase
will amount to approximately
35 cents per $100 valuation.
The News was told. The tax
rate the past year was $1.95
per $100 but the Board is not
ready yet to set the rate for
the new year until they study
next year’s budget, members
said.
The necessity for the in-
crease in taxes came about be-
cause of an estimated deficit
in local operating funds for the
coming year of $49,066.00,
Supt. Delton Stilley said. A
review of the budget requests
for the new year compared to
the estimated Income at the
present rate showed the
alarming deficit and a need
for additional money, it was
explained.
Increased costs from a
number of sources contribut-
ed to the expected deficit.
Building repairs on both the
North Ward school and the
High School are imperative
and estimated to cost around
$11,000. Replacement of equip-
ment, increased cost of sup-
plies, need for additional
teachers, all have contributed
to the situation, it was ex-
plained. The school district
lost an estimated $65,000 in
valuation this year with the re-
moval of the MK&T railroad.
The new tax rate will be
set at a later date by the board
after it has made a study of
the proposed budget for the
1971-1972 school term, mem-
bers said.
