Austin, Texas. — Texas retail
sales in August stepped up 9 per
cent decline from August 1948, the
University of Texas Bureau of Busi-
ness Research reported.
Sales of all durable goods rose 9
per cent from the previous month,
but dipped 1 per cent from August
a year ago.
Jewelry stores turned in the big-
gest increase of durable goods in
August — 15 per cent. Automotive
store sales rose 13 per cent, while
building material, lumber, and hard-
ware sales gained 6 per cent. During
this period furniture and household
dealers reported the only decrease
in durable goods sales—6 per cent.
In comparison with August a year
earlier automotive store sales rose 9
per cent, the only increase in the
durable goods group. All other sales
of durable goods dropped from the
previous year: building material,
lumber, and hardware 15 per cent,
