Marine First Lieutenant Mar-
tin W. Smithson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Smithson of Route 1,
Leonard, participaetd Feb. 29 -
March 9 in an extensive simulat-
ed desert warfare exercise called
“Operation Winter Night” at the
Marine Corps Base, Twentynine
Palms, Calif.
The exercise, a combined op-
eration of the First Marine Divi-
sion based at Camp Pendleton
and the Third Marine Aircraft
Wing at El Toro Marine Corps
Air Station, involved all
types of Marine equipment and
every phase of combat skill.
Emphasis was placed on coun-
ter-guerrilla operations, helicop-
ter team troop movements, and
day and night air support.
