THE EMPTY PEW.
By W. JENE MILLER
Christmas
; was the
I didn’t send any «
cards out last year. It
first time in 15 years I hadn’t. I
was ;o disturbed by the modern
‘d.~y version of the “Slaughter of
the Innocents” that I 'took the
money I’d have used to have my
own poetry printed on pretty
paper, and sent that money to
Biafra.
There is no doubt that this
form of writing will have to suf-
j fice as my greetings again this
I year. 1969’s version of the
i “Slaughter of the Innocents” was
I lived out (and died out) in My
I L>aii. And frankly it does not make
: any difference who did it. (It does
i speak somewhat strongly about
the stupidity of those who would
say it never happened at all, but
then Mr. Rivers hap not always
exemplified either integrity or
intelligence!) This year my
money goes to send aid to civil-
fens in South Vietnam.
For those who don’t remember
or aren’t familiar with the phrase,
the “Slaughter of the Innocents”
is history’s way of referring to
the time when the Roman Sol-
diers were sent by Herod to kill
every child under 2 years of age.
And, it is no more difficult to
believe that a powerful ruler
would be afraid of a 2-year-old,
: than that a, heavily armed soldier
would be afraid of one, whether
he be an American at My Lai, or

a Viet Cong at Hue (where, let
us remember 2,000
were slaughtered by
isits.)
The question is NOT what the
Army will do with the Lieutenant
accused of the massacre at My Lai.
If he is not convicted, the world
will simply say the Pantagon
whitewashed him. (Whether the
Lieutenant is guilty or not, it is
the Pentagon which the world
will have on trial.) If he is con-
convicted .and .given life imprison-
ment, the world will say he set-
tled fcr life to cover up higher
ups. Not to try him under Nurem-
burg trial procedures is prima
facie evidence of a cover-up, so
far as the world .sees it.
If he is sentenced to death
and dies in his cell, it will look
like he wlas murdered to silence
'him. If he is put to death legally,
he will be esteemed a hero to
save hits country’s honor (and
his family will be assumed to have
received -the “pay-off.”) And the
morale of the whole army will
be shaken if a man is put to
death for obeying orders!
But, the real question is what
the God of History will do with
a nation which allows its off-
spring to become so brutalized
by its value-systems and train-
ing methods.
Both Rome and Palestine found
out the answer to that real
question ! ! !
