permanent part of UD’s athletic
program.
The club is the latest of several
new programs from the Athletic De-
partment designed to better serve
the needs of the students, according
to Athletic Director Jackie
Disselkoen. Ironically, howver, it
was not Disselkoen, but Freshman
Arron Reed who began the club's
formation.
“Our first goal is to get people out
on the water and sailing,” says
Reed. “Eventually next fall, once
we are able to get some lasers (a very
active sailing fleet) I figure we can
take up sailing competitively.”
The organization is presently op-
erating with two donated sailing
craft, one valued at about $20,000 if
purchased new, said Bruce Toal,
fleet captain of local Soaling Fleet
#28.
“You have a fast boat,” says Toal.
“It’s beautiful to steer and repre-
sents the best in modern technolo-
gy”
The team thus far is composed
primarily of freshmen, but several
upper-classmen have also expressed
interest in joining, as well as faculty
and staff members.
“Dr. Olenick. Dr. Wayne Ambler
and many others are interested in
helping us out,” says Reed. “We’re
serious about this. It’s going to be a
lot of fun.”
The organization does not limit
itself to just sailing and soaling, but
plans to branch out into other areas
of water recreation as well.
“Though our main focus is sail-
ing, later on it would be great if we
could start waterskiing, rowing and
even wind-surfing,” says Reed.
“As we get more sponsorship,
more funds and more people, there
are lot’s of competitions across the
state that we can begin going to.”
Currently the club is in the pro-
cess of designing a flag representa-
tive of the University as well as be-
ing easily recognizable. They are
also, interested in developing T-
shirts and other promotional items
to “help give us exposure and
legitimize the club,” says Reed.
Though only organized for a few
weeks now, the sailing club has en-
countered little trouble so far in

Senior Elaine Gwosdz, who is co-
chairman of the Formal committee
with Junior Liz McAndrew, antici-
pates a successful evening. She said
that the La Cima Club is an “ideal
location for the event because it is
situated in the Twin Towers in Las
Colinas, overlooking romantic Wil-
liams Square.”
The committee does not feel that
decorations will be necessary. The
room, unlike ordinary ballrooms, is
flanked by classical arches and stat-
ues.
The centerpiece in the outer
lobby is an Italian fountain. The
overall color scheme consists of
shades of peach and grey.

The senior retreat is scheduled to
for the weekend of April 15—17 at
Eisenhower State Park. It will be
held at a time at the end of the se-
mester for seniors to reflect on their
lives at UD.
“It is a time for seniors to remi-
nisce,” said Fr. Gregg Kelly. “It will
be a time for the students to think of
their spiritualityand the form of it.”
Fr. Kelly, along with approxi-
mately eight to twelve seniors ar-
ranged the weekend for the stu-
dents. The retreat will enable them
to take a step back from their
studies and activities and think
about the transition from UD into
the real world.
Friday evening. Dr. Robert
Kugelman will speak on remember-
ing. After this, a time for response is
scheduled followed by a praye serv-
ice and possibly another activity.
Saturday morning a panel consist-
ing of Dr. William Frank,
Dr.Gerard Weggemer, and Dr
.Cherie Clodfelter will discuss their
own spirituality and thier awareness
of God. They will also discuss the
people and events that made them
and the wisdom they have learned
and would like to pass along. A
short period of silence will be
scheduled directly after thises talks
to allow students to reflect.
Later that afternoon, Dr. Steve
Maddox, Dr. David Pope, and Dr.
Frank Doe will tlk on faith in cul-
ture and what it means to be a Cath-
olic in American culture.

Father Chris Rabay. The topic of
their discussions will be on vocation
and life as a response to God.
They will be followed by recent
alumni of the University. They wall
describe their experiences in the
real world since graduation.
Sunday morning Dr. John
Sommerfeldt will tlak on prayer and

mass The primary thrust of the re-
treat is not information gathering,
but more reflective. “It is a time for
remembering events and relation-
ships of the past four years. It will
give one a sense of gratitude,” said
Fr. Kelly.
The membership is growing rap-
idly and Athletic Director
Disselkoen remains positive about
the club’s future.
“If I have you, we’ll find you a
boat,” says Disselkoen in regards to
perspective members. “It’s really an
exciting sport.”
In the past, UD has organized
three sailing clubs each of which
eventually disbanded. Disselkoen,
however, remains confident that
this group “is different.”
“I assure you, it will not falter,”
says Disselkoen.
The UD Club has organized a
day at the lake for all it’s members
which will include hamburgers,
sailing and possibly waterskiing on
Saturday, April 23.

Sailing Club contact the Athletic
