tion for the student body. Perhaps
the question of who would laugh
loudest at the suggestion is all that
is left to be answered. If
Groundhog is to continue it will no
longer happen through any organ-
ized appendage of the University
(ie. Student Government); it will de-
pend on personal initiative and
would, of course, be opposed to
University policy. According to
President Sasseen and Dean Miller,
the risk has become too great. They
don’t feel that they can continue to
take a chance with people’s safety
and merely hope that no one will be
hurt. President Sasseen said that we
are in a “catch—22” situation in
that our very attempts to make it
we are
aware of a problem. This, in addi-
tion to the fact that the safeguards
do not fully work puts Groundhog
in a position where it is not likely to
be supported by the University next

cohol use by students--from
Groundhog to personal use in the
dorms. The factor which must be
kept in mind is whether or not the
University is setting itself up in a
it taking an unrealistic chance in
that position. Here at the Universi-
ty, the chance is greatly increased
when one adds the consideration of
under-aged drinkers. When an in-
stitution serves alcohol where mi-
nors are likely to be able somehow
to get it, the level of liability be-
comes much greater and it becomes
very difficult to defend it as an ac-
ceptable risk.
The decision has not yet been
made. First a suggestion must be
made by the University Council to safer and legal shows that
the president. The president will
make his decision and then the pol-
icy in question will be passed on to
the Board of Trustees where it will
be accepted or denied. Although the
ultimate decision has not been
made, parts of the final policy can
be predicted. It is most likely that
Groundhog Day will no longer exist
as we know it. The suggestion has
been make for a non-alcoholic
Groundhog, but I don’t think that
this would be a serious considera-

Due to a change in laws and the in-
terpretation of those laws in the past
few years, a much greater responsi-
bility and therefore liability has
been placed on the shoulders of the
restaurant/institution who sets itself
up in the capacity of a sponsor/host
of an event where alcohol is served
If the patron of the institution is in-
jured on the road as a result of ex-
cess alcohol intake, the institution
can be sued as well as the individual
who served the alcohol to the
accident victim. It has become an
issue with the University of Dallas
to protect itself as thoroughly as
possible by reducing its level of lia-
bility. This requires a reviewing of
the Alcohol Policy and a determi-

portance on campus and relay the
information on to the student body
through this article. This week I
have chosen to discuss the future
possibilities for alcohol on campus.
There have been a plethora of host/sponsor position, and, if so, is
rumors running around campus in — --- —
the last couple of days concerning
this topic and hopefully this will
serve to answer some questions and
clear up what appears to be a very
muddled area.

By Bob Rooney
Recently, eight members of both
Student Government and Student
Foundation attended the Confer-
ence on Student government Asso-
ciations at Texas A& M University.
Like last year, the group departed
energized and unified in a common
goal to increase student
involvement and develop a
healthier student body through
strong and concerned leadership.
Many ideas were absorbed and will
undoubtedly help shape program-
ming and projects in the upcoming
year. There are some ideas, however,
that we are interested in implement-
ing immediately. This article,
which will appear in each issue of
the University News, is one such
idea that we have considered for a
long time but never started.
It is my hope in writing this arti-
cle that a greater awareness of Stu-
dent Government and its activities
will be predominantly informative,
but, well--“No one’s ever called me
exciting before” anyway!
Six weeks from Easter Sunday,
many of us will find ourselves pre-
paring to leave the University and,
God forbid, take on lives outside
UD. Of course many of us will find
solace in putting it off a little longer
by returning to school, but we will
be leaving this place, our home for
the past four years. I would like to
take this opportunity to invite all
students, especially the seniors to
participate in the forthcoming
events.

It is also important to remember
that Executive Council Elections for

approaching. All candidacy forms

tions will be held from Monday,
April 18 until Friday, April 22.

Government’s door.
Each week I will pick a student
related topic which has gained im-
SG president relays vital messages
year.
At the other end of the spectrum
there is the question of personal
consumption. When asked whether
or not he planned on drying up the
dorms and disallowing it therein,
the president seemed confident that
the measures in the new policy
would not be so sweeping. Legal
drinkers will be allowed to imbibe
as long as moderation is preserved.
Once again, the situation that is dis-
couraged is when the University
would find itself in the role of spon-
sor or host. Drinking in the dorms
does not put the school in a danger-
ous position.
Finally, we come to those events
that are referred to as “middle is-
sues.” These are all events, besides
Groundhog, where the University is
the social host or provider.. A deci-
sion will have to be make concern-
