The first electric cooperative was energized in
Texas in 1937. Now 31 years and 1,000 co-ops later,
the idea may well become our most important ex-
port. Electric cooperative experts from Texas and
other states are making regular trips to the orient,
to the middle East and to South America to help
the people of these lands organize a cooperative
to provide their own electricity. And every co-op
veteran who works this tour of duty in a distant
land sees evidence of the early years in our own
rural areas. But he sees a brighter picture, too. He
sees the member-owned rural electric cooperative
as a mature, dependable top notch electric utility
that provides a low-cost efficient supply of electric
power that is Helping Texas Grow. And he knows
that the years ahead in all these lands will be
brighter.
