Go creative!
Blend old furnishings into
new decorative schemes.
In the case of upholstered
furniture, slipcovers offer an
ideal solution for recycling
the couch or chairs.
Wood furniture also will
integrate into a new scheme
with some ingenuity -- and a
touch of boldness.
Heirlooms we inherited
from our parents will not
give us decorating trouble,
but those first purchases we
made as newlyweds prob-
ably will.
That blond wood dining
set, for instance, or that dark
wood Mediterranean bed-
room suite, need special
boldness.
.To play down blond wood-
in the dining room, for
example - try a bold wall
color of red, charcoal brown
or emerald green.
This makes the furniture
secondary in importance.
Also, a new lighting <
scheme can remove empha- '
sis from the furniture.
For me darker woods, |
such as a Mediterranean 1
bedroom set, try a “total”
decorating scheme based on I
printed fabrics -- new bed- I
spread, draperies and car- g
pet.
They may transform the
room into that “all-fresh-and-
new” look.
If the furniture is not ..
valuable for re-sale or for g
sentimental reasons, another I
idea takes daring, too: paint |
it, stencil it, or antique it.
There is nothing to lose jg
with this approach, and the K
furniture pieces may become re
important parts of the.new re
scheme after all. _ . jL,../ V

carpet is complete change,
especially if it’s patterned 0
and hard-to-use. | D
Change it to an area rug - rS

RICK ROPER
PLACE 3 - CITY COUNCIL
WASHINGTON-U.S.
Rep. Phil Gramm, whose
Sixth District includes Bur-
leson, joined a number of
other congressmen Wednes-
day morning in an effort to
dramatize the cost of the
transfer of the Panama
Canal to Pannamanian con-
trol. The group held a press
conderence to indicate their
strong opposition to the es-
timated $4.1 billion it will
cost U.S. taxpayers and
users of the Canal to transfer
control of the Canal facilities.
The Sixth District Con-
gressman, along with most
of the bipartisan delegation
of congressmen at Wednes-
day morning’s press con-
ference, is a cosponsor of a
resolution by Rep. George
Hansen (R-Idaho) which
would prohibit use of funds
to implement the Panama
Canal Treaty without Con-
gressional approval and
would require Congressional
consent for future transfer of
U.S. property or territory in
the Canal Zone.
The backdrop for the
press condeence near the
Capital was a semi-trailer
truck loaded with 44,300
simulated gold bricks re-
presenting the $4.1 billion
cost of the Panama Canal
transfer.
In discussing implemen-
tation of the treaties,
Gramm said that transfer of
the canal amounted to “a
huge land deal in which the
party to which the land is
transferred isn’t required to
pay the transfer costs.”
“The people of my district
object to giving away the
Panama Canal, and they
certainly object to paying for
that giveaway. I’ve always
opposed giving away the
Panama Canal and I’m not
about to vote to pay Panama
to take it. Equity, if there
can be any in the Panama
Canal giveaway, demands
that Panama pay for the
transfer, not U.S taxpayers
and users of the canal,”
Gramm stated.

ance?
A. Certainly. Recent figures
from the Institute of Life Insur-
ance indicate that 86 percent of
all families (including one-
person households) own at
least some life insurance.
Of the total insurance in
force, roughly 55 percent has
been purchased individually,
40 percent represents group pol-
icies, and the balance of 5 per-
cent is credit insurance—the
type that covers your install-
j, ment loans.
