TEXAS TAKES THIRD IN
SELECTED RACEBOAT
CLASSIC
THe U. S. S. NEW MEXICO, affectionately known to her crew as “The Wonder
Ship,” rejoined the fleet the latter part of last week upon the completion of her
overhaul period at the Puget Sound Navy, Yard. The U. S. S. HOUSTON and
the U. S. S. PORTLAND, also returned to the San Pedro-Long Beach area from
the East coast, after completing the Presidential cruise.

CJPON being asked why he arose so early our friend the soldier remarked that
he liked to take advantage of that precious period of daylight between reveille
and rally by sections.

A suggestion for the Christmas menu, for those who do not relish turkey, is
suggested by an item in the New York Times, as follows. “Visitors at the gigantic
goodwill feast recently held for Arabian'chief's ar Amman were , regaled with one
of Arabia’s most highly prized dishes, boiled camel. Each camel is stuffed with
three sheep, which have been stuffed with eight chickens stuffed with eggs and
nuts. The meat is served with boiled rice.” An alternate entree furnished by my
friend who was with Dr. Roy Chapman Andrew’s last expedition to the great Gobi
desert, might be stuffed dog. Briefly reported, the preparation of this delicate
dish is as follows. Starve a dog When he is about in his extremity due to lack of
food, gorge him with rice. Beat dog to death, to make meat tender, roast entire
and serve.
In as hard fought and closely contest-
ed a two mile struggle as anyone would
care to witness, our selected cutter crew
last Friday, finished far up in the money
by capturing a third place and forty-
two points towards the coveted Iron Man.
At exactly 2:45 ten racing cutters, each
manned by the selected oarsmen of their
respective ships, and everyone of them
trained to the minute, lined up, waiting
for the smoke of the referee’s one pounder
that would send them straining and fight-
ing down that- two mile stretch.
In all our years of watching- races in
the Fleet we have never seen a more
evenly matched, or finer set of crews
than those which lined up out there last
Friday.
In number one lane we find the
Pennsy, a good crew, the same which
finished fourth in San Francisco. In
number two, the Missy, a dark horse
entry. In number three the TEXAS, a
young and powerful looking crew. In
number four, the California, winners of
last year’s Newport Cup, and second
place winners of this year’s Seattle
Times Cup, coxswained by “Beef” Owens.
We know they will be up there. In
number four, the Wee Vee, another dark
horse, but given a good chance by the
dopesters. In number five, the mighty
Tennessee three times winner of the
Seattle Times Cup, and the crew that
has’nt been beaten in any race they have
entered for the past three years. They
are the top heavy favorites, and the
pickers figure them“in the bag” for this
one. In number six, the Colorado, a rug-
ged crew that finished second in Frisco.
In number seven the Maryland another
one to watch. In number eight, the
husky Nevada, third place winners of the
Olympic race, and so on down the line.
The boats got away to a good start
with the Missy and TEXAS taking the
lead. At the mile mark the Missy, led
i closely followed by the TEXAS, with the

JfOR the first time in five years the U. S. S. MARYLAND football team went
down to defeat. The trick was turned by Captain Larson’s Pennsylvanians, and
this is how it happened. Leonard Ball kicked a 25 yard field goal, and Ensign
Beppo Lambert recovered a MARYLAND fumble to take it over for a touchdown.
Final score PENNSYLVANIA 9 - MARYLAND 0. This victory by the PENNSY
places them Number One in Group 1, and gives them the right to meet the Champs
of Group 2, the U. S. S. ARIZONA. The championship game will be played on
New Year’s Day in Bremerton, and we’d certainly like to see it. Congratulations
PENNSY and ARIZONA on emerging triumphant after a tough season.

JDEAL spot for a good time: just the right degree of loungitude and lassitude,
says Reader’s Digest. Merchant Marine please' note and govern yourselves ac-
cordingly. Since the good old days of wooden ships and iron men the Navy is
convinced that “there aint no such place.”

rpHE Secretary of the Navy in his annual report, according to an exclusive press
dispatch appearing in the Los Angeles Times, says “The United States has started
construction on, or appropriated money for, 283,159 tons of aircraft carriers,
cruisers, destroyers and submarines. As to personnel the Secretary says that 1
increased appropriations for the current year, “promise improved conditions so ■
far as numbers are concerned.”
