Map-Making in
Nicaragua
Despite the fact that the Marines in
Nicaragua have the situation well in
hand, Nicaragua has never been cor-
rectly situated on the maps of theN
world. In order to leave no stone of
possible obstruction unturned, the Bri-
gade Mapping Section, under the effi-
cient command of Captain C. O. Hen-
ry, has undertaken the tremendous
task of putting Nicaragua where she
ought to be in relation to her neigh-
bors and the globe.
Maps of Nicaragua now extant are
not of the accuracy required by Marine
standards. They have served invalua-
bly for the use of patrols and for. simi-
. lar purposes where the general features
of the terrain given shaped our ex-
pectations. Now, however, the work
has begun on a scientific basis. Corin-
and this was the first accurately lo-
cated point. Some months ago, Ensign
Meyers of the TJSS Rochester fixed the
latitude and longitude of Managua by
astronomical observations.. With Ma-
nagua-Granada as a base line, the
work will be carried north to Jino-
Iwo PJSMC anti-aircraft portable
- searchlights [100 amps, at 30 Volts] are
being used for triangulation. With
these lights, ground positions are ar-
tificially elevated to heights visible
many miles. The lights were used sev-
eral times this past week, one at Ma-
nagua, the other at Granada, and a
transit installed at Tipitapa to record
the intersection of bearings.
Instruments for continuing the work
by observation of celestial bodies have
been ordered. Pending their arrival,',
the searchlights will be used to deter-
mine the positions of Tipitapa, Teus-
tepe, Dario, Jicarol, Matagalpa, Trini-
Segovia Map

Tracing of the map of Eastern Segovia
by the First Battalion, Eleventh Regi-
ment, has been completed, and will be
ready for distribution in a few days.
The "area covered extends from Jalapa
to Matagalpa, and from San Fernando
to Paso Real do Cua.
dad, Esteli, and Jinotega, in the order
.named. The map constructed will be
1: 3Q0,000, on which a mile is Of about
the width of a pencil line.
Reports are desired from all stations
able to see these beams of light, in
order that their visibility, judged to
be approximately 35 miles, can be de-
finitely determined. The Brigade Map-
ping Section is anxious to secure the
services of men experienced in opera-
ting these portable searchlights.
