through the research efforts of the faculty. The pro-
bationary status of the institution had been relieved. A
greatly strengthened and improved faculty was performing
smoothly and satisfactorily with respect to the purposes
of the School.
In September, 1942, the u'getary situation was
poor. Financial difficulties durin- the year were
encountered in the management of the John Sealy Hospital,
due to unsatisfactory budgetary arrangements. These wew
corrected through the generosity of the Sealy and Smith
Foundation and the understanding sympathy of the State
Legislature. Efficient management permitted a readjustment
of the situation so that satisfactory financial conditions
could be arranged for the next biennium.
By August 31, 1943, the Medical Branch of the
University of Texas had come back to its former position
of effective leadership in medical education in the Southwest.
The Medical Branch again showed promise of becoming
outstanding in medical education, research, and public
service, in accordance with the professed ideal of the
people of the State of Texas to have a medical branch worthy
of a university of the first class.
