“Guestlmatcs" are that about
15 per cent of the bulls in Tex-
as are either sterile or low in
fertility, says county agent B.
T, Haws.
Fertility of bulls can be leter-
mined by using an clcctra-eja-
culator to collect the semen
and having a qualified person
evaluate it. Cost of this process
ranges from bout $2 to $10 per
bull, depending on the number
to be checked. That's pretty
cheap insurance against having
calf crop 3 to 6 months late,
after finding out a bull is sterile.
Or if a bull is low in fertility,
the calf crop may be only 35
to 65 per cent
For example, if a rancher
had 20 bulls and spends $5 a
head to test them and finds one
sterile It would cost $100 to
identify and cull the sterile bull,
but it would cost well over the
$100 to maintain the bull for a
year and he wouldn’t have sired
a single calf.
Another profitable practice is
palpating cows to determine
pregnancy. The national aver-
age is 80 per cent conception of
the total cows bred. This indi-
cates that 20 per c«mt of cows
bred will be nonproductive dur-
ing the breeding season
Culling by palpation dominat-
es the cost of keeping the cows
until the calving season and

then being disappointed. Preg-
nancy determination allows a
cattleman to decide early on
disposal of open cow*.
Both fertility testing of bulls
and pregnancy testing of cows
can be profitable for ranchers
if they are wisely and regularly
used, concludes Haws.
County stockmen are being
advised by County Agent B. T.
Haws to be on the lookout for
lice on their livestock. These
pests can reduce profits and in-
crease feeding costs for the
winter unless they are control-
led.
Livestock producers wet? re-
minded that copies of MP-691,
“Texs Guide for Controlling Ex-
ternal Parasites of Livestock
and Poultry" are available at
county agents office.
The publication contains in-
formation on Insecticides formu-
lations and how to use them for
controlling external livestock
and how to use them for con-
trolling external livestock and
poultry parasites. It contains a
dilution chart for mixing sprays
and dips and outlines control

The glorious liberty of the
children of God.—(Rom. 8:21
—A.V.)
God, in his infinite goodness,
provides for all of us the truly
glorious liberty of being His
children. To deserve that
status we must make every
effort to pattern our lives in
His true image, in every way
