NEW YORK. June 21 "Boxing
greatest showman " That ts the ti-
tle which George Lewis ("Tex")
Klckard promoter of the coming
Dempsoy-Carpeutler bout ha3 earned
In the staring of several bouts draw-
ing tho largest gato receipts m the
history of the sport
Thrown in contact with the boxing
game by accident. RIckard an ac-
count of whose career reads like fic-
tion accomplished nearly everything
he set his mind on doing and has
kopt going along successfully desplto
conditions that sometlmos made the
word "quit" seem attractive.
nickard wa born In Kansas Citv.
Mo Jan 2. 1S71 Hi father a
millwright moved to the Panhandle
of Texas when the embryo promoter
was a small boy. At the age of 12
years thrown on his own resources
with u widowed mother two broth-
er and three sisters to support
' Tex" turned to the calling of cow-
punchtng universal In Texas
Then started the travels which
have made tbls man a "cltlien of
the world " He met succrs In the
cattle biislireas but In 1S9I "hit the
trail" for the Klondike Month or
hardship brought fair returns but
after a year or two in Dawson. Rick
ard again moved This time he
drew up in Goldfleld Nevada at the
time when the mining rraxe engulfed
that section
Hut Goldfleld was not satisfied
with the local activity which the
miners brought to that place The
town "booster" wanted national
uote and RIckard suggested a chain
plonsblp boxing match
The promotion of big enterprises
with the aid of virtually no capital
has been characteristic of this pros-
pector who has tapped the gold
mines of Broadway as well as of the
Klondike and Nevada From his
friends h secured enough money to
offer Jimmy Brltt and Terry Mc-
Govern a 130000 guarantee for a
championship bout In Goldfleld
Coming from an unknown at that
time the offer was hailed by tho
boxers and their managers as a Joke
RIckard kept right on however
and the manager of Joe GanB and
Battling Nelson were more susceptl
ble to the glint of 130000 In gold
piece laid before them. The light-
weight fought a memorable battle
at Goldfleld The town wa adver-
tised nationally and "Tex" RIckard
became a successful flittc promoter
Since that tlmo Rtckard has pro-
moted from a financial point or view
tho greatest ring contests ever
stagod They have been successes

Bouts staged by him in Madison

previous to last March brought in
more than $1300000 Approxi-
mately $1000000 will flow Into the
box office beforo Jack Demp3ey and
Georges Carpentlcr square off at
Jersey City. July 2 easily covering
the tremendous outlay necessary to
stage this bout RIckard Is one of
the few who have coaxed substantial
returns out of promotion In the hom-
ing game
"Take a chance" and "Be square"
are RIckard s watchwords which
seem to summarizo reasons for tho
success which has conii' to him In
business as well as boxing. For box-
ing Is only a sideline with him. Tot

prtsea In South America. His herds
roam over a rango of moro than
1000000 arreti. He Is general man-
ager of a firm backed by American
financiers in a project which produc-
es beet for American consumption
But despite the "t3ke a chance"
motto mere good luck haB had but
little part in the success of this man
who now sits in a sulto of offices
in Madison Square Garden and di
rects in the Jersey bout July 2 a
"million dollar proposition." Start-
ing without capital; applying well
the principles of credit; making the
firfelts of boxers pay for preliminary
expenses of the earlier bouts. Rick
ard has been successful in the stag
ing of 30 battles without a single
loss In the Goldfleld days be was

business man is still prospecting
