Uncle Sam Will Soon Own
Largest oi World's Airships
B th Anociite.1 Prnt.
LONDON. Jul 5. - I'nclc Sam
will soon become the possessor of
the British built R-38. the largest
rlRld airship jet constructed in any
country and a craft that represents
the very "last word in "atrial dread-
nought" destining
Trim and smart as the quarter-
deck of an admiral's flaKship the R-
a "cruising speed" of Co miles per
hour.
Her specifications call for an arm-
ament of 1 1 Lewis guns a one-
pound automatic machine gun four
bombs of r.20 pounds and eight
bombs of 230 pounds. The machine-
' points so thnt any form of attack
ironi land sea or air might effect-
ively be combated.
The ship's heavy nriuaiuent serves
as an index to her character. She
is designed to oerve. if occasion
arises as the general headquarteis
of a whole battle fleet eyes ears
and in emergency an auxiliary
"business end." From the. compact
convenient "skipper's" cabin close
under her nose to the neat little
machine-gunner's "nest" at the very
tip of her stern ZR-2's arrangement
and construction spells efficiency
' and "strictly business "
. Without extensive alterations
1 ZR-2 could not accommodate enm-
fortabl.v a paity of (15 persons as did
the Italian-built semi-fluid airshin
"Roma" after being taken over by
I the American government recently
But if a submarine wer- sighted
ZR-2 could maneuver Into position
then the pressing or a button in the
j captain's control cabin would rc-
j lense a bomb or a dozen bombs if
I required to "do in" the enemy's un-
dersea boat.
' IfVnemy airplanes became bother
some during this procedure they
would not rind as was the case with
the German Zeppelins that there
was an unprotected spot under the
ZR-2's lower part aft where they
could hover and pump machinegun
bullets Into Iter gasoline tnnks. To
meet just such a contingency there
is the stern machine un nest ouo
situated some 50 yards ahead on
the under part of the ship and one
cockpit at the top or the shii.
' would probably be able to do an-
thing necessary with Ins one-pound
automatl" piece.
. These represent some or tin in.
rrovements indicated by e.amui.i
lion of wrecked Zeppelins and tit Ik f
experience which have been Ineoi-
porntetl In the ZR-2 .
Seen in a flight the ZR-2. will he
much like her sihter-sliip R-r. 1 ' oi
trans-Atlantic fame. But her shim-
mering sides and clean appearance
conceal a confusion or "interior
workings" that to one unaccustomed
to such craft is most bewildering.
As out proceeds along the narrow
"man-high" corridor which extendi
the entire longth of the ship lie see.-
a complication of criss-crossed alu
minum girders lows of gasoline and
water tanks what seems to be und
actually are acres of fabric gas
bags anil a miscellany oi guy wins
control valves pipes swivels hum-s
and gevv-gaws that defy understand
ins. But alter a guide who kt.ow.s
very inch or the gigantic bulk has
made i vplanations the handling oi
the Hlnp is seen to be simplicity it-
selt. Thus the "mkipper" standing at
the wheel in his cabin just as a s-a
captain on the bridge has within
reach a miscellany ot buttons
switches and levers dt ctricallv con-
trolled with which he can release
ballast water deflate one or moii
gas ba(s imply his gasoline tanks
start a bomb towards an objectivi
ami. of course steer tlie ship up-
ward downward to right or left.
He can send orders thiotigh a ti I-
ephoni' system which connects up
the whole ship tor the starting or
i.toppiu of one or all of tile ship s
si propelling engines advise hi.-.
nuubiiit-guniierH of the approach of
an oiiuiny or through tho operator

Comfortable bunks are provultd
for the ofl'-hhift of l he ciews in all
r.O officers and mm. During pro-
longed light warm meals are mad
possible by a system of cooking from
ungiim exhaust heat. Electric ligutb
are provided wherever required. The
ship can "tie up" to a mooring post
replenish her gas oil water and fuel
containers through "feed" pipes ler-i
minatlng at her how and resume her j
Journey with the loss of but a few
hours' sailing time.
Here are some of the ZIt 2 s
measurements nnd specifications:
Length r.35 feet (50 feet longer than
R-3II
Diameter S5 feet four inches i ii
feet seven Inches larger than R-3 1 1 .
Capacity 2700000 cubic net
(against R-3 l's 2000.000).
Total lift under n'oriiial conditions
SI) tons (against R-3 l's 69 . tons )
Disposable lift available for car-
ry log of fuel and other stores or if
altered for commercial uses for
freight or passengers CO tons
I against R-3 Fa 2! tonsil
Total horsepower 2100 (against
R-3 l's 1250
Engines six of 350 horse-power
each (against R-3 l's five of 250
horse-power each.)
Endurance at 50 miles per hour
cruising speed for ZR-2 and lull
speed for R-3 1 0000 miles
(against R-3 l's 3000 miles)
"Ceiling" or maximum altitude
25000 feet (against R-3 Fs 13.S00
feet).
If adapted for transport. ZR 2
could carry 10 passengers and two
tons of freight in a non-stop flight
from England to Egypt In a'out -18
hours. As a result of the experience
gained in building the ZR-2 howev-
er her constructors have designed a
ship with a gas capacity of about
1000000 cubic feet which It is be-
lieved could carry 50 passengers and
13 tons ol treikht on the same jour
ney In 10 hours.
