Joneph Horace 23 made a spectacu-
lar escape from Sing Sing yester-
day. He sawed the barn of his coll
climbed to the roof and dropped into
the. Hudson Hlver and Bwam to safe-
ty.
The escape Is the first -from 'the
root to be made in forty years.
Horace was serving a sentence of
ten years for manslaughter.

SAN FRANCISCO Sept. 14.
Itoscoe "Fatty'.' Arbuckie was
indicted early today by the
grand jury on a charge of man-
slaughter in connection with the
death of Virginia Rappe moving
picture beauty.
A dismissal of the murder
charge originally filed against
the movie comedian is expected
as a result of his indictment on
the lesser charge.
His attorneys are prepared to
attempt to secure his release to-
day on bail.
The coroner's inquest will be
continued today.
The manslaughter indictment
will be returned formally tomor-
row. It is expected that bail
will be fixed at ?lf5000.
When he appears Friday for
his preliminary hearing on the
murder charge his lawyers will'
ask the judge to dismiss the
charge.
The district attorney said that
he had not decided which charge
he will prosecute. Hundreds
viewed the body of Miss Rappe
as it lay in the casket awaiting
the coroner's permission for burial.

It was explained that the pleni-
potentiaries were not appointed to
go to Iverness in response to Lloyd
Ceorge's invitation but were chosen
to carry on possible negotiations
which may or may not follow the re-
ceipt by Lloyd George of the cabl

Sheriff Head Files Complaint
Against Ivan Man
Today
A charge ot assault with intent
to niurdnr was filed against Dick
Carlisle or Ivan by Sheriff Lon Head
today in connection with the shoot-
ing of Itoscoe Bryant which oc-
curred at Ivan last night.
Two shots were fired according
to witnesses one of which took ef-
fect. The two men were standing in
front of a small fruit stand opposite
Deaver's Garage when the first shot
was fired. Bryant ran and another
bullet followed in his direction but
missed its aim according fo tho
story told officers who went from
Breckenridge.
Carlisle was arrested by Lee Cor-
bet Ivan constable and brought to
Breckenridge and lodged in Jail.
Bryant was rushed to the Emergency
Hospital hero where an examination
disclosed that tho bullet had entered
Ills back near tho left shoulder
blade ranged upward and lodged In
tho back of his neck Inflicting only
a llesli wound tho ounet was re-
moved by physicians. His injuries
will not prove serious it was said at
tho hospital this morning.
Carlisle went to Ids drug store Im-
mediately after tho shooting. A
crowd followed him to the door and
for a time threats of violence were
heard. The crowd finally dispersed
when Carlisle was arrested how-
ever and everything was calm when
District Attorney Claude McCaleb.
