BOOKS/:,CHILDREN
It isn’t that we’re neglecting the girls, or even forgetting about
them. But, as a few readers have pointed out, most of the books
mentioned in this column are-or seem to be—aimed at boys,
One obvious reason is that a larger proportion of boys need to
be conned into reading books. F**---
Another reason is that whereas
a girl will pick up and read a
boy’s book, a boy will never
pick up a book intended for
the girls.
So, every now and then we
will just have to defer to the
ladies and come up with a
bundle of titles that are strictly
for the fairer sex. But, our
pitch remains the same: If you
have a girl at home who is not
normally inclined to read
books, do not look for results
by suggesting or ordering a
visit to the library. Go to the
library yourself, bring home
books that might appeal to her,
and place them where she will
see them. Then sit back and
hope curiosity does the trick.
Here are a few titles to con-
sider as starters:
Daughter of Lapland by In-
grid Pelletier (Ages 10-13). A
novel about the colorful and
hardy Lapp people during
their annual migration with
their reindeer herds. Twelve-
year-old Ingre is unhappy and
uncertain about her return to
Lapland, where her father
drowned. But living with her
cousins helps her to overcome
her fears. Illustrations show
Lapp costumes and settings.
So Much to Live For by Al-
thea Gibson with Richard Cur-
tis (Ages 12-15). Althea tells
of her life after she retired
from championship tennis and
strove for a new career in
championship golf. This is a
book that has the appeal of
golf, the appeal of a protagon-
ist against barriers to race and
barriers to a woman competing
in a man’s field, and especially
the author competing against
her own success in an earlier
field.
Can’t You Pretend by Mir-
iam Young (Ages 6-8). Cathy
finds that every time Chris
wants her to play pretend, she
is expected to play boys’ roles.

When Mother Was Young
by Maxine Kumin (Ages 7-
11) . How mother as a girl
lived in New York during
World War II. It could be any
American city, including small
cities, for the book depicts
women working in war plants,
young fathers going off to sea,
blackouts, and meeting refugee
children. Readers can get an
idea of rationing and of the un-
restrained joy that greeted the
end of the war. Illustrated in
full color.
Bonnie’s Guatemala Adven-
ture by Lynne Gessner (Ages
10-14). Even before she sets
foot on the beach Bonnie is
half terrified, for she disem-
barks from a steamship via an
open cage careening over the
surf. As a girl of thirteen she
finds life in the tropics minus
some of the refinements of
home, but eventually she over-
comes privations and misad-
venture and comes to take
some satisfaction in making a
crude hut liveable. Illustrated.
Dolls From Cheyenne by Pa-
tricia Miles Martin (Ages 10-
12) . A fascinating story of a
girl who receives a present of
two dolls from an uncle in
Cheyenne. Imaginative playing
with the dolls leads to a won-
drous dream. Or, as any im-
aginative girl might wonder,
was it a dream? Illustrated.

The Blue and Gold Dinner honor-
ing the Cub Scouts forty-first anni-
versary was held in the school cafe-
teria Friday night. Den One had
made centerpieces of red, white, and
blue flag placecards for them and
their families. Den Two had made
nut cups using the patriotic colors.
The theme for the month of Febru-
ary had been “American Heritage.’’
The pack meeting was called to
order by Mackie Don Babers. James
Seigler led in prayer before the din-
ner. The pledge to the flag was giv-
, en. Awards were presented to those
who had not been present at the
previous pack meeting.
The highlight of the evening was
the appearance of Mr. Troy Decker
I of Greenville. Decker, a line inspec-
, tor for the City of Greenville Elec-
tric Department, boasts a vocabu-
lary of 21 (mostly fowl) sounds of the J
wild. Mr. Decker is a promoter of i
wildlife conservation and explained
to his audience the importance of
protectng our wildlife. The young
men enjoyed his visit thoroughly and
applauded loudly when he imitated
the various sounds of the birds and
ducks.
Members of Den One are Jeffrey
Babers, Ray Evans, Kelly Felty,
David West, Darrel Porch, Anthony
Arey, and Les Nichols. Den mothers
are Mrs. Bob Felty and Mrs. Mikel
West.
Members of Den Two are Sanders.
Chambliss, Bradley and Phillip
White, Andy Gay, Roger Seigler, Roy
Don Rubarts. Den mothers are Mrs.
J. D. Gay, Jr. and Mrs. Kenneth
