the biggest news here in rome is in the form of
snow, that is, "neve" (in italian). rome's first snow
since I965 and the deepest snow in over I00 years
(estimated by this reporter and an assistant at 8
inches) devastated the eternal city, it began friday
evening about half way through joe hasler's surprise
birthday party and continued intermittently to
Sunday morning, needless to say, the party hastily
reconvened outside amid huge, damp snowflakes and
happy smiles of the fifteen students remaining on
campus over the weekend, sr. gilda made it to the
affair and got in her share of snowballs from both
offensive and defensive side, someone else brought
out some trays from the cafeteria to use as sleds but
they tended to break in tight curves, meanwhile in
the cities of munich, florence, venice, naples, and
interlaken, the ud travelers found the going somewhat
frigid, there was no snow in norther italy or germany,
,^-but it was so cold that it was difficult to see the
' interesting aspects of a city, in venice, sara harris and
mike phillips had to stop in every three blocks or less
at a church and warm our hands over the votive candles,
manus isensee, also in venice, claims that his pensione
room would have been warmer had he opened the
window, incidentally, he stayed in the penthouse
briddl chamber of the "villa rosa." the group who
wfent to munich missed touring lowenbrau brewery
by two days; it opens for tourists on march 8, the
biggest disappointment thus far in the semester, on
Sunday afternoon we indulged in some snow sculpture,
after the traditional three story snowman we made
a pyramid and a sphinx which never reached its
polished, finished state because work was always
interrupted by the artist's tendency to exchange
snowball fire, this week we have midsemester exams
and everyone is wondering where the time has gone.
with only half the semester completed many of us
