CHICAGO- —Astronauts orbiting through
space may be pioneering new sleeping habits for future
generations on earth.
This was forecast by Grant Simmons of New York,
president o£ Simmons Co., a bedding firm that is con-
ducting sleep research in cooperation with the National
Aeronautic & Space Administration.
After predicting today’s standard 54-inch wide mat-
tress someday will join the dodo in oblivion, Simmons
said:
“Looking still farther down the road, our sleep re-
search indicates some question about the acceptance of
the universal expectation that eight hours sleep is ndl-
mal or necessary.
“We see a possibility of assisting people to sleep
more efficiently or faster with a consequent increase in
usable waking hours.”
—All forffiwf siifflalHiieh as exteffial
and temperature, and internal physical or mental
stress, Simmons said, have a direct bearing on the
restfulness of sleep.
Simmons said research with NASA indicates hu-
mans may someday sleep in sort of a sleep capsule with
a totally controlled environment.
While he said it is too early to outline details, such
a device “may influence our sleeping habits as much as
the discovery of vitamins has influenced our eating ha-
bits.”
Simmons was one of a panel of furniture industry
leaders who spoke at a news conference of the home
furnishings market in the American Furniture Mart
and the Merchandise Mart.
