Backpack is an exercise to
test the amphibious capabili-
ties andreadiness of the forces
of the Seventh Fleet and the
Nationalist Chinese Naw. The
exercise, with over 4C 000 men
and 140 units particioating. will
culminate in an amphibious as-
sault on beaches of southern
Taiwan, and will demonstrate
the effectiveness of the Seventh
Fleet to rapidly move a signi-
ficant combat force to a troub-
led area in order to assist an
ally.
Prior to the assault aircraft
of the Seventh Fleet will soften
beach defenses In audition
sunport ships will conduct anti-
submarine warfare exercises
and the area surrounding the
beachhead will be cleared of
any obstructions and mines.
