Stereoscope Coming Back.
The old-time stereoscope, the friend
of our childhood days is promised a
return to popularity in a somewhat
n*w guise. The old-time device ha*
been hitched to the latest phase of th*
photographic art and It may be but
a short time before the modernised
stereoscope win be seen in the par-
lor* and sitting rooms of every bom*
a* they were once before. The mov-
ing picture machine ha* been mad*
available for domestic purposes. It
I* no length limited to the auditorium
and the hall, but a new camera, small,
compact, and easily- operated and not
expensive, places the facility for mak-
ing these picture* within the reach of
the amateur. With the knowledge ac-
quired with a little practice one may
make pictures which will catch the
merry twinkle of the eye, the fleeting
light of baby's dimple and the little
individualities which are loot tn the
fuedneea of the etudio pose.

Nile and Lake Once Connected.
Geologists are not confined to tht
testimony of fos.dls in ascertaining
the changes that have tajeen place on
the earth's surface; sometimes living
animals are equally good as evidence.
In the center of the vast and almost
unexplored part of Africa south of the
Sahara lies Lake Chad, which just
now is the goal of many scientific ex-
peditions. In several parts of this lake
there have been found specimens of a
/resh water shrimp of a variety found
nowhere else except in th* Nile. Seed*
may be carried by birds for long dis-
tances, but the egg* of this shrimp
are too fragile for this. The conclu-
sion is that there must at some time,
not too far away as geologists reckon,
have been a junbtion between Lake
Chad and the Nile or at least tbat the
two must have been close enough so
that in time of flood the waters min-
gled. Now they are separate by many
hundreds of miles of desert This has
been imperfectly explored, but it Is
known that for a thousand miles or
more to the east of the lake there ex-
tends a series of depressions that
might easily be the bed of an ancient
arm of the lake. This region is almost
flat. an£ the lake even now has a
habit of shrinking for miles from its
banks during the dry season. Pos-
sibly engineers of the future may re-
open the old course.

diamonds as cheaply as I will
Diamonds today come from a com-

buys a thousand dollars worth
buys as cheaply as the one who
buys ten thousand dollars worth,
provided he deals direct with the
cutter or importer. Granted that
a dealer has sufficient business
acumen about him to buy his goods
, properly that one is in position to
sell you diamonds most cheaply
whose low expense of doing busi-

Indian is not considered the equal of
the expert white man as a rifle shot,
be is the best moose shot in the
woods. This sinewy, fleetfooted woods-,
man is fond of picking up a moose
trail Just after a light snow has fallen.
Then, in light marching order, he
will follow the animal across the coun-

him. The process frequently takes
from three to four days, and It is
possible only to the hardiest ot pur-

traveling is good and it is a simple
matter to follow the trail. At length
the animal, confident of having
thrown off his pursuers, will gradual-

is off again immediately upon hear-
ing the first sound or upon the pres-
ence of those who are following
It is a fact that a vigorous man can
tire out a moose in the long run, and
the Indian will at length approach
near enough to get a shot,
burden himself with but little in the
way of camp equipage, however, and
then a scanty supply of food and a
blanket is all that'he carries besides
his rifle.
This method of killing moose is re- I Por Commissioner Precinct No. 4
