' The city is ready to begin on the
West Oak south side macadam now,"
said Street Commissioner Wiggs Fri-
day, "and if the West Oak citizens
want the work done, it is up to them
to ‘get busy’ at once. The city has
put in the macadam at the Cedar
street crossing on the lower end of
West Oak, and we are ready to be-
gin work on finishing up the south
side of the street, if the citizens are
ready. They have been notified to
get the few outstanding property
owners who have so far failed to
sign the contracts in line.
"If this Is not done immediately,
the city force expects to take up the
work of macadamizing West Hick-
ory. where a number of the proper
ty owners have assured the council
that the citizens are ready and will-
ing to do their part."
The city rock crusher has again
been put to work and id turning o«n
several tons of the crushed rock »

macadamizing of the square has been
receiving favorable attention ami
definite steps are likely to be taken
in that matter soon. The county

Denton fire department showg an
abnormally large number for the six
weekg since July 21 and a lot of peo
pie aver that a short item published
in the Record and Chronicle on Juiji
20 about It having bpen so long
since the city had a fire fa one cause
of it.
A story was turned in on July 20
by one of the “cubs,” stating that
there ha.i not been a fire in the city
since carlj- tn May The next day
the fires began with the destruction
of the R. S. Barnes home on South
Locust street. Since then the de-
partment has been kept on the
“hop’’ at an average (ate of more
than a bad fire a week.
The losses aggregate since July 21
and inclusive of the fire on West
Oak ThuraJay night more than 320,—
otto, and one insurance man stated
Friday that his companies alone had
lost about >17,000 with two or three
other agencies losing a less amount.
