Founder’s Day was effectively
and appropriately observed at
the regular meeting of the West
Eml PTA on Friday. Feb. 17, at
8 p.m. in the auditorium Mrs.
Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Mrs.
Alice Birney founded the First
National Congress of Mothers on
Feb. 17, 1897, and later the name
was changed to National Con-
gress of Parents and Teachers.
Mrs. L. J. Luedecke was in
charge of the program honoring
the Foundation. She directed |
questions to a panel of some of I
our past presidents, namely, Mrs. I
Ed. Ludwig, Mrs. Beu Rogers, |
and Mrs. Melvin Spiess. Their
answers brought valuable infor-
mation to the members. The PTA
Objects were read by all present. |
A candle-lighting ceremony fol- |
lowed, where candles were lighted |
for the Founders,, for the home, I
sehool, community, and the child. Il

ders,” was sung by Mrs. Spiess, !
Alvin and Edwin Raeke, and Rev. IJ

A skit, “Hesitating Harry,” was
given by fifth grade students; a
song, “Open Up Your Heart,”
and a one-act playlet, “A Joke
on the Jokers,” were presented
by sixth grade students.
Mrs. Miles Knolle gave an in-
teresting and informative discus-
sion on the topic, “The Family
Assumes Civic Responsibilities,”
urging all parents to be civic-
minded and to train their child-
ren in this also.
