Austin-Traffic deaths in Texas
decreased by 1 percent-in 1989
compared with 198% a reduc-
tion in part caused by a substan-
tial decrease in the number of
motorcycle deaths in the state.
A total of 3,361 traffic deaths
were reported in Texas in
1989, a decrease of 34 deaths
from the 3,395 fatalities on
Texas streets and highways the
year before. Motorcycle traffic
deaths dropped 18 percent, from
295 in 1988 to 243 in 1989.
“Texas had a slight increase
in the number of traffic deaths
in 1988, but the overall trend for
the last decade has been down-
ward/* DPS Director CO1. Joe
Milner said. “I am very pleased
to see that 1988's increase ap-
parently was not the beginning
of a sustained upturn in traffic
deaths in Texas.”
