Last week we were discussing
the history of one of the most
important inventions ever to hit
the west...barbed wire. The article
quoted mentioned the few collec-
tors of barbed wire in the country
in 1957. About 1965 Jack Glover of
Sunset, Texas, put out a book
illustrating many of the types of
wire then known. Two years later
he put out ‘‘More ‘Bobbed’ Wire”
which listed almost 300 more
different types of wire from
modern wire to types patented in
the 1870’s. Many of the examples
shown are in our exhibits.
Another book, published in 1966,
-by‘Robert T. Clifton shows sket-
ches Of various types of barbed
wire plus gives details on how to
classify the different types. In his

introduction Clifton estimated
there were 5,000 collectors at that "
time. Quite a change from the
twelve estimated in* 1957!
One sketch in Glover’s book
illustrates one of the major
problems associated with barbed
wire on the plains and, in
particular, in our area. The sketch
shows a herd of cattle stopped at a
toll gate in a barbed wire fence
with two armed cowboys handy to
collect the toll. Wranglers used terfP
driving their herds through the
grassy, fenceless plains of Texas
did not take kindly to such
unfriendliness. Waterholes fenced
off were even less appreciated.
The results were cut wires,
inflamed terfipers, and consider-
able bloodshed.
