Q. My mother has a crape-
myrtle xvhich needs to be moved
because of it’s large size. When
should we move the plant and is
it advisable to cut the top back
-before we move itf'x
A. Crapemyrtle tends to get
larger than most people antic-
ipate. Moving the plant should
be done during this month while
the plant is still dormant. Re-
moving about a third of the top
growth is advisable to compen-
sate for root loss when digging
the plant. Immediately move
the crapcmyrtle to a new and
more accommmodating land-
scape location.
Q. We have a terrible time
fighting sandburs in our lawn.
What do you recommend for
control of this xxeed? A nursery
sales person has told me that
fertilizer and xvater will help the
turf out compete the weeds. Is
this really true?
A. Your nursery professional
is right that a program of proper
fertilization .and watering will
help develop a stronger turf
which is less prone to sand-
bur problems. This is espe-
cially true xvith bermuda in full
sun which is a strong competi-
tor if properly maintained, you
should also use a prcemergcnce
herbicide such as Balan, Be-
tasan, XL, or E.C. Grow among
others. Check xvith your local
nursery for these products. Ap- should I incorporate the rye into
my garden?
A. Cut and till the Elbon Rye ________
into your garden a month prior fictional spacecraft made famous
to planting your vegetables.
This should give the cover crop
ample time to decompose before
