Spring brings out the gar-
dener in all of us. Home garden-
ing enthusiasts and commercial
growers will have many oppor-
tunities in April to learn about
successful growing. The follow-
ing garden checklist swill help
you keep track of many impor-
tant garden programs and tasks
which take place in April.
Planting:
♦ Select and install land-
scape plants. Local nurseries
are packed with beautiful plants
which can increase your prop-
erty value.
♦ Plant warm-season vegeta-
bles such as tomatoes, beans,
corn, squash and eggplant. Re-
member to use recommended
varieties
♦ Plant summer flowering
perennials
♦ Establish lawns with sod,
sprigs, plugs, seed or hydro-
mulch. Bermudagrass seed can
be sown in mid-April through
May.
» Plant container-grown pecans
fruit trees.
♦ Install warm-season flowers
for color. In sun areas try cop-
per plant, moss rose, lantana,
marigolds, zinnias, purslane,
salvia among many others. In
shade try coleus, begonias, im-
patiens, caladiums.
» Plant herbs in containers or
beds.
Fertilizers:
♦ Apply a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2
ratio lawn fertilizer to warm-
season lawns in mid- April.
Use a product with slow-release
nitrogen for best results. These
products are also effective for
landscape plants and trees.
♦ Apply zinc to newly emerged
pecan tree foliage and continue
for three to four applications at
labeled intervals
♦ Feed container plants with
slow-release nitrogen fertilizer
such as Osmocote.
Pruning:
♦ Prune spring-flowering^shrut un(jer these same regulations.
Applications for the permits can
be secured from Texas Parks
and Wildlife.
When the permit is received,
the landowner can then order his
fish from a licensed, permitted,
resident fish farmer. County
Extension Agents will have a
list of these sources as soon as
it is available, about Mav 1.
