The Thursday session will
cover reduction of squirrel
and bird damage, pecan
disease control and pecan
insect control. The schedule
for controlling pecan scab,
rosette, casebearer, and
weevils will be shown.
Suggested techniques to
minimize losses to crows,
bluejays and squirrels will
be helpful to many growers.
The instructors will include
Deena Pattillo, Wildlife
Damager Control Service,
Dr. Norman McCoy, Exten-
sion plant pathologist; and
Emory Boring, Extension
entomologist.
This event is being
sponsored by the Wichita
County Pecan and Fruit
Committee headed by Virgil
Woodfin. Woodfin and Jim
Kuehler will bring branches
for participants to practice
grafting and budding tech-
niques, providing the bark is
slipping. Other growers
assisting with the short-
course, include Delores
Tucker, J.B. Cassada, Travs
Bolin, A.D. Kemple, Ho-
ward Ragland, Ralph Ar-
ceneaux, H.M. Wells, Jim
Barger, Ben Fowler, Linda

committee has set the

A new ‘‘twist” to
gardening may include
growing of unusual vegeta-
bles. For example, Mrs.
Erie Miller, Jr. of 2722
Devon has been real
successful in growing Jer-
usaleum artichokes. Her
planting of last spring has
produced more artichokes
than the family can
consume.
She planted the tubers in
a bed separated from her
garden. They were allowed
to grow during the summer
and the tops were cut off
after frost, with the stems
still protruding above the
ground. She says, ‘‘this is
important in order to
’ determine where to dig for
the tubers."
The artichokes are dug as
needed by the family during
the winter. The tubers are
dug and thoroughly washed
ans scrubbed to remove all
of the soil from the growth
