(NAPS)—A proposal in Cong-
ress to remedy the Social Security
“Notch” is drawing new attention.
The “Notch” refers to a group of
senior Americans, born 1917-
1926, who are affected by changes
that were made in 1977 to the
Social Security formula. The
answers to this quiz will let read-
ers know what’s true and false
about the “Notch” issue.
1. The average “Notch” baby
receives approximately $1,000 a
year less in benefits than the
average retiree born outside the
“Notch” years (a) True (b) False?
2. Each “Notch” baby has lost
an average of $9,000 in benefits
since he or she retired (a) True (b)
False?
3. “Notch” babies are part of a
group receiving the highest bene-
fits that have ever been paid over
the life of the Social Security pro-
gram (a) True (b) False?
ANSWERS: 1. (a) True. 2. (b;
False. According to a report from
the TREA Senior Citizens League,
each “Notch” baby has lost an
average $18,000 in benefits since
they retired. 3. (b) False. That is
an erroneous contention drawn by
a Congressional Research Service
that lumped Notch babies in with
earlier retirees.
