Safford, Ariz., Oct. 28.—An armless
woman, who said she was Mrs. Ruth
Matthews of Oklahoma City, a hitch-
hiker, gave birth to a baby girl at 3
a. m. Saturday while lying beside the
highway in near freezing temperature.
Sheriff Emert Kempton, who took
the mother and baby to a hospital,
said Mrs. Matthews was lying “on the
cold, muddy ground, without bedding
and with very little clothing,” when
the baby came.

Miss Clifford Campbell of Missoula,
Montana, visited their parents, form-

bell, and wife of McKinney. From
there, with their parents, they went
on to visit their sister and daughter,
Mrs. Charles E. WiHcoxson, and fami-
ly of Montgomery, Ala. While cross-
ing the Mississippi River they made
pictures of the river and also the
bridge, which they said was a mile
long. While in Montgomery they went
through the capital and also visited
the beautiful park. They ate break-
fast in the historic town of Vicksburg,
on the bank of the Mississippi and
had a wonderful time while there

Kempton said Mrs. Matthews, her
husband, Charles, and three small
children, a boy of 8 and two girls, 5
and -6, were hitchhiking back to Okla-
homa and had stopped for the night
six miles east of here. They were
without funds.
Mrs. Matthews, 39, said the baby
was her ninth.
The baby, weighing 6 3-4 pounds,
was named Ora Lucille.

Baptist women, representing the
three McKinney churches, met in the
parlors of the First Church for their
regular fifth Monday meeting of the
City Federation of Baptist Women.
The First Church W. M. U. were
hostesses, with the Elizabeth Dowell
Circle serving refreshments. Fall
flowers decorated the parlors.
Mrs. T. H. Bryant conducted the
opening song service. Mrs. W. E.
Ditto gave the welcome address. Mrs.
Lloyd Davis brought the devotional.
Mrs. John Green, president, heard
reports from officers. Mrs. H. C. Pope
corresponding secretary and treasur-
er told qf the radio which the Federa-
tion recently purchased for the in-
mates of the County Farm, where the
Federation also sponsors services
each Sunday afternoon.
A special duet by Mrs. Glen Ford
and Mrs. Roscoe Wallis was enjoyed.
The main address was by Mrs. Walter
Commons, who told of her trip to the
Baptist World Alliance at Atlanta.
Refreshments of sandwiches, cake
and hot chocolate were served.

Woman Has Baby As She
Lies in Mud Beside Road
Mrs. C. B. Touchstone, 80 years of
age, died at her home in the Fayburg
community Monday morning at 1
o’clock. Funeral services were held
at the residence at 3:30 o’clock Mon-
day afternoon.
Surviving are two sons, Luther
Touchstone and Jim Touchstone, and
one daughter, Mrs. Luddie Thompson.
A son, Jim Touchstone, married the
former Miss Luetta Holland, a sis-
ter of Walter Holland and Mrs. J. B.
Strickling of McKinney. Mr. and Mrs.
Holland and Mr. and Mrs. Strickling
attended the funeral services at Fay-
burg.

ten days. She was a teacher in
Carney several years ago, and is also
a former teacher at Lebanon, and
is an excellent one.

Frisco visited his brother-in-law and
sister, Mr. and Mrs. D. L. James, and
daughter, also Mr. and Mrs. C. S.
James Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Haun and chil-
dren of near Plano and Robert Bryan
of Edgewood were here Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Wade of Dallas

here. They own a farm near Panther
Creek, and have been looking after

The Senior B. Y. P. U. enjoyed a
weiner roast in M. B. Yarbrough’s
pasture on Hallowe’en night.
Dave Christie lost quite a lot of
corn and cotton seed in his barn that
burned last week. Claud Alexander,
who lived on the place, also lost
some corn and four large hogs, and
his cow was so badly burned that
she is expected to die.
E. G. Bryan’s house also caught on
fire Monday. Some passersby noticed
it and stopped and notified him and
aided in putting it out. This is three
times it has caught, but each time
they have managed to extinguish it.

success Friday night. Forty-two and
bingo were played. The children sold
pop corn, chewing gum, candy and

to tell fortunes.

S. I. Kelsey in McKinney Hospital.
