Ann Carson typist extraordinary.
All day long Ann Carson sits at her
typewriter in the telephone office. She is
responsible for these thousands and thou-
sands of names you see.
She puts new names into the telephone
book. She takes old names out.
Before her alert brown eyes pass in con-
tinual procession names from every section
of the city. Names from fine houses in the
fashionable district. Names from modest
cottages. Names from stores and offices and
factories.
The Smiths and the Joneses arc there. The
Cohens and the Kcllys. Everyone from the
Aachs top of column first page to the
Zycowskis.
All of them with their definite reasons for
needing a telephone.
Down this column she goes striking out
names to be removed typing new names in
the margin drawing neat pencilled lines to
indicate where they go.
Down she comes working rapidly. Past
the "Davises." Past the 'Dclancys."
Reaches your name perhaps and types it in
"Doc John r .1023 Anystrcct MOrning-

New she checks each name running
quickly down the list of changes.

To Ann putting names into the directory
is no matter of setting down information

in that small gracefully-poised head and
it's used

She can't afford to make mistakes. The
names that leave her hands start upon a long

They undergo the careful scrutiny of copy-
readers. They go to a long clattering row of lino-
types there to be set into type.
Then they arc clamped to batteries of huge
presses waiting to begin the roaring din of
printing the directory.
Thus they pass through many hands
before the dclivcryman finally leaves at your
