Dear Loretta:
I have wanted and needed
to write to you for a long
time. I thought my problem
would get better by now,but
it seems a lot worse.
I will be 19 this summer
and am a freshman in col-
lege, working part-time, also
My boy- friend is in the ser-
vice and will be home for
his leave before going to
Vietnam. My problem is:
I don't know who I am and
what I really want in life.
I change my mind every day.
College and work don't seem
to satisfy me. My boy friend
wants to give me my enga-
gement ring on his next le-
ave before going overseas.
Loretta, I love him and want

Dear Ann:
An engagement is not a
wedding ring. It's only a pre-
amble to the final decision.
That's the whole idea of an
engagement, to have the
time to find out if marriage
is really what you both want.
His going overseas is certain-
ly giving you both necessary
time in which to decide.
For your own peace of mind
I would, if I were you, see
your college psychologist or
your county or city board
of health. There is no fee
involved there. If the idea
upsets your parents, they
needn't know until you and
your counselor decide diff-
erently.

I don't know who I am or

Dear Karen:
If you're wondering — so
am I, about how a girl your
age can be so casual about
possible pregnancy out-of-
wedlock! ! If you automatica-
lly equate dating with sex,
I don't blame your parents
for their strictness. I think
they are being fair under
.the circumstances, if I un-
derstand both”what you’ve
written and what is between
the lines.
THIS IS TO PARENTS :
So many of my young readers
paint you as ogres and ogres-
ses. I would like to hear some
frank commentary explain-
ing how you look at things
and what your "hang-up" is
toward this restless genera-
tion.

he thinks, see this conspicu-

them one great moment 'of

that might in the long run
prove effective, however.
He would spread the word
that far from being consider-'

many of the hijackers get

(the New York City) welfare
department denied welfare
benefits to a woman with 12
children who had migrated
from Mississippi. If her appli-
cation had won approval, she
would have received $745
a month in welfare, tax free
and not including free medi-
cal care available under the
Medicaid program. Multiply
that $745 by 12 and it comes
out to a cool $8, 940 in re-

there are statistics to bear
this out. "
More than 33, 000 residents
of the 16th District are re-
ceiving monthly Social
Security Benefits totaling
approximately $2, 444, 000,
according to a report received
by Congressman Richard C.
White from the Social Secur-
ity Administration. While
the majority of those recei-
ving Social Security pay-
ments are retired persons, the
report shows that more than
a third, 11, 409, are under
60 years of age. These in-
clude disabled workers, and
the dependents and survivors
of those insured under the
Social Security system.

ients and the monthly pay-
ments (in thousands) follows
for each county of the Dis-
trict.
