in the collector's office here the
pay ments Saturday were, of course,
heavier than for any preceding day
since taxes became due. but even at
that the business done was not as
large as was expected. Collector
Crowder and his fo.ee of deputies ex-
pected to be kept hard at work until
midnight, the last possible moment
for payment, but instead of that the
rush was over by 7 o’clock and from
that time until 9 or 10 o’clock the
business could be easily handled.
After 10 o’clock those who came to
pay off were few and far between.
As had been previously announced
the office of the collector was not
kept open Sunday, but nevertheless
there were many who delayed until
too late and on Sunday tried to pay
their taxes. Mr. Crowder Monday
