Lakendrick Vanzandt only got one
chance to make something happen in Fri-
day’s preseason scrimmage at Hallsville.
He made his one chance count.
Vanzandt had a 70-yard touchdown
run on the Lions’ first play from scrim-
mage then sat out the rest of the night,
and the Lions defeated Hallsville 2-0 in
the first preseason action for both teams.
Vanzandt, a three-year starter for the
Lions, was an all-district candidate in
each of the last two years.
Earlier in the week, Henderson coach
Phil Castles said Vanzandt and some
other returnees wouldn’t see much time
on the field.
“Coach said I was only going to get a
couple of plays, so I wanted to make them
count,” he said immediately after the long
touchdown run.
Janathan Newman added a 41-yard
touchdown grab later in the Lions’ first
allotment of 15 plays, and those two
scores were the only touchdowns on the
night for either team.
The squads played a total of 101 plays
with each offense running close to 50
plays. There was also a time for special
teams work, and a live quarter that was
scheduled to be played was bypassed.
“I thought there was a lot of good
effort from our kids, and as far as I could
tell we came out healthy,” Castles said
afterward.
Hallsville’s first team offense took the
field first, and Henderson’s Quincy Bry-
ant grabbed a tipped pass for an intercep-
tion midway through the 15-play session.
It was the only turnover on the night
for either team.
Henderson’s first-team offense then
got an allotment of 15 plays as well, and
