The Henderson location
was the first Bealls department
store to ever be opened, and on
Thursday, the store will offi-
cially be called Stage.
Brothers and Henderson-
natives Archie, Willie and Rob-
bie Beall opened their first store
in 1923. They opened a second
store in Nacogdoches in 1926
and a third in Mount Pleas-
ant in 1927. The chain contin-
ued to expand until its merger
with Palais Royal in 1988 and
formed Specialty Retailers Inc.
In 1992, SRI acquired 76 more
stores, including a juniors’
chain called Stage. Houston-
based Stage Stores now oper-
ates under the Bealls, Goody’s,
Palais Royal, Peebles and Stage
store names.
The newly-minted store will
be unveiled to shoppers dur-
ing a grand opening and rib-
bon cutting ceremony at at 8:45
a.m. Thursday, at the 2317 U.S.
Highway 79 S. location, then
open for shopping at 9 a.m.
For the past few months, the
store has been in the process of
being remodeled, and the final
touches are now being made.

POSTSCRIPT
For those in Texas con-
cerned about voter turnout,
don’t look at totals from
Tuesday’s state constitutional
amendment election. Roughly
11 percent of registered vot-
ers made it to the polls. It’s
understandable, I guess, since
there were such vital govern-
ment functions to be decided,
like making sure hunting and
fishing is in our constitution.
Did that really need to go to
voters?
