The sweltering days of Summer are
upon us. For some of our friends and
neighbors, this time of year has poten-
tial to be life-threatening. Remember
that our summer temperatures can be
dangerous to the very young and the
elderly, disabled and house bound.
Each year an average of 658 people
pass away as a result of extended expo-
sure to extreme heat.
With this staggering statistic in
mind, the good people of Cato Fash-
ions and Henderson Interchurch Min-
istry have, once again, teamed up to
collect fans for those in our community
who, either, don’t have one or can’t
afford one on their own. They complet-
ed their fan drive last year with total
donations of 69 fans. The goal this year
is a meager 75 fans. With the help of
the generous people of Henderson and
the surrounding area this goal could be
so quickly met.
The donations will be given to Rusk
County residents through HIM. Resi-
dents have to give perosonal infor-
mation to HIM before receiving food
or any other donation from the non-
profit.
Fans, and other donations, can be
dropped off at Cato Fashions in the
Henderson Plaza Shopping Center
anytime between now and the end of
June.
The Rusk County Sheriffs Office,
Wise Up Rusk County and East Texas
Substance Abuse Coalition have part-
nered to host a Community Prescription
Drug Take Back event from 10 a.m. to
noon June 28.
During that time, community mem-
bers can help prevent prescription drug
abuse by properly disposing of potential-
ly dangerous, expired, unused or expired
prescription drugs at the Mount Enter-
prise Library. This service is free and
anonymous.

The Henderson City Council unani-
mously approved the lowest bid to con-
tinue the Master Street Improvement
Program that was developed and imple-
mented in 2003. The program is reevalu-
ated and updated once a year.
Rayford’s Truck and Tractor from
Marshall, had the lowest bid in the
amount of $1,503,633. The highest bid
was for $1,998,530, by East Texas Bridge.
“The city received six bids on this
project and a few of the bids had math
errors,” said Davis Brown, Public Service
Director. “Plans are to work on 24 streets
and work should start late July or first of
August.”
