Voters in Texas go to the
polls today to cast their ballots
on seven amendments to the
state’s constitution. Polls will
be open until 7 p.m.
Here in Rusk County, voters
will also decide three local races
as well as whether City of Over-
ton can sell liquor.
Municipal elections on Tues-
day’s ballot include a trustee
election in Overton Indepen-
dent School District for Place 3
between Sara True and David
Proctor.
City of Overton will decide a
local option election on a propo-
sition that would allow for the
legal sale of all alcoholic bever-
ages including mixed beverages.
In West Rusk County Con-
solidated Independent School
District, voters will select three
trustees on Tuesday. Those
on the ballot include, Robert
Anderson, Kevin Roy, Jamie R.
Jones, C.D. Martin and Sandra
Smith.
Elections for city council and
school trustee in Henderson
were canceled after incumbents
were the only candidates to file.
In order to vote, Rusk
County residents must present
a valid photo ID in the form
of a driver’s license, handgun

For the past couple of
weeks, Donald Trump’s poll
numbers have taken a bit of a
hit as other GOP candidates
grab the spotlight. That’s
likely because it’s becoming
more apparent that Trump’s
a one-trick pony. Much of his
face time in front of voters or
on camera (or both) is devot-
ed to insulting one of his fel-
low candidates. That’s only
going to get you so far with
voters, even in our entertain-
ment-drive culture.

Raises awareness,
funds for education
outreach center

ETMC-Henderson will host
its annual one-mile walk and 5K
run at 8 a.m. Saturday to benefit
the ETMC Henderson Diabetes
Education Outreach Center.
Registration is $10 per per-
son and children ages 12 and
younger can participate for free.
Individuals are encouraged to
participate and businesses can
sponsor a team of five to 12.
Registration will begin in the
hospital lobby at 8 a.m. and the
walk and run will begin at 9 a.m.
The route for both the run
and walk will include por-
tions of North and South High
streets, walking trails on Fair
Park Ave and Fairpark Drive,
East Ragley, Van Sickle, Dobbs,
Webster, Mill and Wilson
streets. Portions of these roads
will be blocked off for the run
and walk, and drivers should be
aware of walkers and runners.
Walkers will start from the
hospital parking lot on North
High Street and head south to
East Main Street and double
back to the hospital.
Runners in the 5K will take
a course from the hospital to
Fair Park and back. Starting
at the ETMC parking lot on
North High, runners will travel
south, cross East Main to South
High and use the outside walk-
ing trails on Fairpark Drive to
circle the park. They will then
head west on East Ragley Street
before turning south on Fair
Park Avenue where it meets
South High. Runners will then
head north on South High, cross
East Main and take North High
east to Van Sickle Street, north
on Dobbs Street, west on Web-
ster Street to North Mill and
north to Wilson Street back to
the ETMC parking lot.

The Henderson High School
band earned the title of first
place 4A band in the state
at Saturday’s National Asso-
ciation of Military Marching
Bands in Carthage.
The weather cleared on
Saturday and bands were able
to march on Carthage’s turf
football field. Henderson beat
bands from Cleveland (second
place), Carthage (third place),
Gladewater, Chapel Hill,
Center, Spring Hill, Athens,
Brownsboro, Gilmer and Pitts-
burg to be named number 1 in
division 4A.
Judges scored each band
anywhere from one to 1,000
points on their performance
and, after the highest and low-
est scores were eliminated,
