tailored for special needs stu-
dents ages three to 22 in Rusk
County public school districts.
In the last few years, other sur-
rounding schools have joined
in on the event.
Named after beloved Hen-
derson resident Sarah Murphy
who passed away in January
2008, the field day originally
started out as the Henderson-
Area Special Olympics, but was
changed to honor Murphy after
the second year.
“Sarah was raised here, went
through the Henderson school
district as a life skills student,”
Pike said. “She worked at
Brookshire’s back when we had
one so everyone knew her and
she was very active in special
Olympics and field days like
this so this was a great way to
honor her.”
Pike said it costs around
$15,000 to put on the event so
all of the money raised through
donations from citizens, orga-
nizations and businesses goes
directly into hosting the event.
