PAYING UNCLE ...
My income tax is rathrf' frightful, it takes my savings
from the bin, but I pretend it is delightful to pay the money
with n grin. Perhaps the grin is rather sickly, a ghastly thing
that has no style, perhaps it wilts and shrivels quickly, but, all
the same, it is a smik*.- When something painful is befom us,
let’s go ahead and get it done, refUse to join the mourners’
chorus, just stand the gaif and call it fun. it doesn't make
one’a tax much lighter to wear a dark, forbidding front, and
say our Uncle is a blighter whb pulls a nervy strong arm
stunt. It doesn’t pay to be the spectre of all the grief that
ever grew, and cuss the sad-eyed tax collector, and knock his <
weary map askew. It doesn’t help to tell the neiglibors that
you will sail for other lands, where men who bend to useful
labors may keep the products of theft hands.. - Perhaps I
grumble in my cellar, where I’m remote from human eyes,
down there where no obtrusive felloe may soo my tears or
hear my cries. Perhaps I wail when no one’s looking, but when
I’m on the village street you hear me cheerily gadzooking, you
see me go on nimble feet; I go to pay my income taxes,.I hand
in rolls of hard-earned bones; I will not join^the battle-axes
who shake the heavens with their groans. - * ••

gasoline tax bjlft' which the House
passed ntjt rate of 1 cent per gal-

the Senate conjjniittee to 2 cents.
The intangible tax bill has been
given a majority adversq and a
minority favorable report. The
motor vehicle tax measure Is still
in committee, as is the delinquent
tax bill, and the sulphur tax bill ie
out with favorable minority re-
port. If the House sine die ad-

are just six days in which to get
these and other important 'meas-
ures out of the way. The House
has yet to pass finally the inherit-
ance tax bill, which went to en-
grossment last week, this being the
last of th.c major taxation •meas-
ures on the House program.
The Senate mlwel the appro-
priation for an educational survey
from $75,000, as the bill proposed
to $50,000 and there were a num-
ber of votes favorable to cutting it
dtp $25,000.
A Senate Joint Resolution pro-
posing that the counties be permit-

a road maintenance tax up to $1
instead of the maximum of 30c now
permitted has been engrossed in
Tbe Senate.
