“AMERICA’S ANSWER”
In the spring of 1917 the young manhood
of America heard the cry of suffering Europe,
and So<5nThe tramp of eager feet, shod for war,
was heard on the battlefields of bleeding France.
These poys .wpre the shops, fields
and counting nouses of America and constituted
the most precious sacrifice which America could
have laid on Freedom’s altar for the most pre-
cious thing that America possesses at any time
is her boys and girls just emerging into man-
hood and womanhood, and America’s Answer
in 1917 was an expression of her willingness to
sacrifice her deafest thing she had for a cause
she believed just and had finally espoused.
These millions of boys probably upheld the tra-
dition and prestige of America over there and
at Chateau Thierry, Argonne Forest and other
battlefields established in the thought of man-
kind a ne wconception of America as a fighting
nation. All honor to the boys of 1917. Some
of them fell over there and were buried in .he-*’
roes’ graves, some of them came back crippled
and maimed for life, but most of them are with
us here today hearty and well, with new places
built for themselves in the Nation’s work day.
These boys constitute the American Legion and
they will in just a few years be America’s rulers.
When that time comes let tis hope and pray that
they take the world view which they took back
in 1917; that they realize then as they did in
1917 that if the world suffers America suffers
too. Let us hope and pray that when the boys
of the Legion have grown to the stature of com-
plete manhood and nave taken charge Of Amer-
ica’s activities that America’s Answer to the
world when it appeals for counsel and guid-
ance may be as sustaining and virile as the one
Woodrow Wilson gave in the spring of 1917.
