. _______ GREETING "SPRING
The spring’s at hand, and spring is good, but let ns gently
knock on wood before we dance and sing; oft winter set ins to
jump the track, but at short notice he comes back, and makes
a mess of spring. Oft have I gamboled on the lawn, exclaim-
ing, "Winter’s surely gone, with all its frosts and snows;" and
when another dawn 1 knew, 1 had the grip and el.
chilblains in my toes. Oft have 1 soal.ed
early birds put up a note that heralded tl
it from uncle’s chest, to guard ng un m
sure a grievous thing. And often on a \, rm.l nay I’ve put my
heavy things away, and donned a light, r brand; then y.ui
might see the village doc come racing up my coiicii.de walk, a
poultice in each hand. And new when spring vmnr-, for keeps
1 know that somewhere someone weep.- for promises that fail-
ed; some fellow hanked on weather sweet, and now his beard
is full of sleet and snow — unless it hailed.
