In a letter to the Editor of the Ferguson Forum. Mr. Ross Lawther of Dallas, a son of
'lion. Harry P. Lawther, one of the forepiost lawyers of North Texas, tells of a visit made to the |
graveyard, immediately after the primary of August 28, 1920, in company with his brother, and
corroborates the description of the burial plot as given in the affidavit of Mr. Alsup.
Mr. Lawthef’s letter is an interesting and illuminative contribution to the literature of
the campaign and The Forum, with his permission, prints it below:

To the Editor of the Ferguson Forum,
. Temple, Texas. ,
Dear Sir: 1 note in your issue of Oct. 21st letter of Mr. Fisher Alsup rela-
tive to the missing headstone in the Neff burial lot near McGregor, Texas.
I would like to say that immediately after the last democratic primary, my
brother and I visited the Neff lot in question, merely to satisfy our own curiosity.
We observed the grave with the missing headstone, exactly as described in Mr.
Alsup’s diagram. The groove or hollow in the sandstone or limestone base at
the head of the grave was half filled with remnants of mortar such as is used in
cementing a headstone to its base. We left McGregor satisfied that the entry “Patty
Morris Neff’’ in the Neff Bible is the record of the birth of a girl who died in in- \
fancy and not a record of Mr. Pat Neff’s birth. This, together, with much other
information which was volunteered to us while in that vicinity, convinced us that
Mr. Neff was not born in 1871,
hut in 1872, as shown by the records produced by Senator Bailey.y
Yours truly,
Signed) ROSS LAWTHER.
