Sort of like the yearly

Puts me in a reminiscent
mood.
Once upon a time, on a small
plane over the African jungles,
the co-pilot walked to the back of
the plane, then returned to the
cockpit saying "There’s nothing
wrong”. There’snothingwrong.
There’snothing wrong.”
As it turned out, the landing
gear wouldn’t come down and we
had no brakes.
Then the lights went out.

The autumn sky is a
busy sky, and a wet one too,
with half a dozen water-

plus a giant horse and, best of
all, another galaxy visible to

The timing of the moon
couldn’t be better, however,
for meteor watchers awaiting
the Orionid meteor shower
which peaks Oct. 21. The
dark sky may make this the
best shower of the year.
An earlier lunar event
occurs the night of Oct. 9/10
when the moon passes in front
of the Pleiades star cluster.
Watchers with binoculars may
see stars blink as they pop in
and out behind mountains on
the limb of the moon.
At the center of this watery
part of the sky is the great
winged horse Pegasus. This
constellation is just east of the
zenith and is easily recognized
by four stars forming a great,
and almost empty square.
For mythological reasons,
Pegasus is flying upside down;
his head to the lower right
comer and legs extending
from the two upper stars. The
long, shallow V of the horse’s
hind legs actually form
another constellation,
Andromeda.
Just above the third star in
the upper hind leg is the famed
Andromeda galaxy, or M31.
This was the first stellar object
firmly identified as a separate
galaxy. At a distance of 2.2
million light years or 13
trillion miles, it is the most
distant object visible to the
naked eye.

reaching up toward
Andromeda, and the circlet of

Below Pisces lies Cetus, the
whale that was sent to devour
Andromeda. (West of Cetus
are Aquarii s, the water
carrier; Piscis Australis or
southern fish, and
Capricornus, the Sea Goat.
